Arcadia falls in five to Alvernia

Glenside, PA:  (Oct. 13, 2010)  -  Arcadia University jumped out to a two sets to zero lead in tonight's Commonwealth conference match against Alvernia University, however, were unable to hold on losing the final three sets and the match, 3-2 (25-21, 25-9, 20-25, 25-27, 11-15).

The Knights looked like they would be able to run away with the match in the opening sets of play, as they utilized their attack sets to perfection. Passing was critical as Alvernia would look to attack early and often however, Arcadia was prepared, getting the ball to first-year setter Carlee Rossiter who continued to place the ball in the right spot for the outside and middle hitters. Arcadia took the first set 25-21, and the second set 25-9, taking advantage of every miscue of the Crusaders. Over the first two sets Arcadia was connecting for the kill on an impressive 51% of their attempts, compared to 18% for Alvernia.

In the third, Arcadia would look to come and close out the match, however, they witnessed a huge change in momentum as Alvernia would take the third set 25-20. Using the momentum they had just gained from the third set win, Alvernia would jump out to a 13-4 lead in the fourth set, causing Arcadia to call time out and attempt to regroup. The Knights would respond with a 21-9 run, taking a 24-22 lead, and match-point on their serve. Alvernia would however, force a side-out, tying the game at 24 points a piece, and eventually winning the fourth set 27-25 to force a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set would see both sides battling it out for the conference victory, with the score ties at 9-9, Alvernia would close out the match on a 6-2 run. Alvernia improves to 2-3 in league play, while Arcadia drops to 0-5.

Rossiter would finish the match with a game-high 41 assists. Junior Hailey Barger led the Knights with 13 kills on 27 attempts, while senior Natasha Wetten chipped in 10 kills and a team-high 20 digs.

Arcadia will have the weekend off, and return to action next Tuesday October 19th when they travel to face Commonwealth opponent Lycoming College at 7 PM.
