Pride outlast Knights 3-2 in season finale

Seniors: Ashley Griffith, Adrianne Altera, Ashley McCarthy & Caroline Champi
GLENSIDE, PA:  (Oct. 26, 2010) -  Arcadia University Field Hockey responded from a 2-0 deficit with goals in the first and second half but the Pride of Widener University would use the go-ahead tally by leading scorer Colleen Cormier off a penalty corner with 15 minutes to play to secure a 3-2 win in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action Tuesday in Glenside.  The loss for Arcadia puts an end to an otherwise very successfull season for the Knights who finish with a .500 overall record of 9-9.  In just her second season on the sidelines, head coach Erin Livingston guided her team to four more wins from a season ago, including the first two Commonwealth Conference wins for the team since joining the league in 2008.

Today also marked the career finale for four senior captains, Adrianne Altera (Califon, NJ/Voorhees), Caroline Champi (Laflin, PA/Pittston Area), Ashley Griffith (Cape May, NJ/Cape May Regional) and Ashley McCarthy (Norristown, PA/Norristown Area).

The Knights controlled the offense in the early onset of today's game with Widener starting keeper Megan Purcell coming up big for the team to preserve a scoreless game.  Purcell had registered 7 saves before her team was able to push the game's first goal across the board in the 16th minute.  Megan Scarpinato got off a shot at the top of circle that trickled through the crease and in the right side to give Widener a 1-0 lead.  Minutes later, Kate Fetterman made it 2-0 Widener when she dribbled in the circle and shot into the right side past Arcadia sophomore keeper Sarah Baumgardner (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland).  The Knights were awarded a penalty stroke with seven minutes remaining in the half and senior Adrianne Altera was called upon to take the stroke. Going into today's game, Altera was 2-3 this season in stroke opportunities and added another one to her resume when she shot high at the left post and in past Purcell to cut the Pride's lead to 1, 2-1.

Persistence and grit paid off for Arcadia as they would respond again with the equalizer in the 48th minute as sophomore Marilyn Beatty (Chalfont, PA/North Penn) recovered the rebound off the original shot from McCarthy and put the ball into the back of the cage to tie the game at 2-all.  Cormier would then put the Pride in front 3-2 in the 59th minute. Purcell would again come up huge for the Pride, making four critical saves against the Knights who kept the pressure coming in the final minutes of regulation.  A penalty corner for the Knights with seconds remaining would be their final chance at forcing extra minutes but Altera's final shot sailed wide and the Pride escaped with a 3-2 victory.

Purcell would finish with 20 saves for Widener who improves to 10-4 and 3-3 in the league.  Baumgardner finished with 2 stops for the Knights who dominated the shot column, out-shooting the Pride 34-7.  Arcadia also led in corner attempts, 18-10.
