Sharp-shooting Griffins frustrate Knights in non-league play

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA: (Nov. 23, 2010) – Despite having four players in double figures, the Knights were unable to stop tonight's offensive barrage from the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy, losing 90-67 in a non-conference game.  With tonight's loss, Arcadia falls to 2-3 overall while the Griffins improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Griffins began the game on a 15-3 run before the Knights' Damien Palantino 'GR (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) sunk a pair of three-pointers before a Jose Ortiz '13 (Philadelphia, PA/Math, Civic, and Science) jumper pulled Arcadia to 17-12 with just over 13 minutes left in the half.  But a 20-0 run starting at the 12:34 mark of the half gave the Griffins comfortable space.  The Griffins capitalized during all possessions, outscoring the Knights in the paint 40-4 in the first half as well as shooting 72.7% from the field (24-33 FG).  The Knights didn't enjoy the same success, shooting just 25.8% (8-31 FG), including 3-13 from beyond the three-point arc.  The Griffins led at the half 51-24.

Credit goes to the Knights who did not give up and outscored the Griffins in the second half 43-39.  They also tied the Griffins in points on the paint with 18 as well as bench scoring with a 22-11 margin.    The Knights also shot 88.2% (15-17) from the charity stripe.

Despite the outcome, the Knights were led by tremendous efforts from a core group of players.  Ortiz came off the bench to score a team high 15 points, his fifth straight game in double figures as well as pull down a team high 6 rebounds in 15 minutes on the court.  Palantino also tied Ortiz on the team lead with 15 points of his own, including drained four of the Knights' five three point bombs.  Aaron Benusis '14 (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) emerged off the Arcadia bench to net 10 points, his second straight game in double figures.  Benusis also pulled down 5 rebounds and shot 6-7 from the free throw line in 19 minutes of play.  Junior Colin McCarthy '12 (Langhorne, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) was able to put up 12 points on 5-11 shooting. The Griffins were paced by career highs from Jon Crabtree and Frank Champion, with 23 and 19 points respectively.

The Knights will take the holiday off before gearing up for their first Commonwealth Conference home opening game on the new court at the Kuch Center, when they battle rival Widener University on Wednesday, December 1 at 8 PM.
