Field Hockey plays heartbreaker with 3-2 OT win over Keystone

LaPLUME, PA:  (Sept. 18, 2010) – In a total team will-to-win affair, Arcadia University's Adrianne Altera (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) made the team's second overtime penalty stroke count with .08 seconds to play as the Knights came away with a hard-fought 3-2 OT win against Keystone College in non-conference field hockey action Saturday.   The win moves Arcadia's record to 5-1 overall to start a two-game home stand beginning Monday against Delaware Valley College.  Today's win avenges last season's 2-1 loss in overtime to the Giants in Glenside as the all-time series between these two teams stands at one win apiece.

The Knights came out strong in the opening minutes of play and were rewarded for such with the game's first goal at 3:18, scored by sophomore Lynn Beatty (Chalfont, PA/North Penn) off a corner opportunity.  First year Hannah Christensen (Harrisburg, PA/Central Duaphin) made a clean hit as the corner inserter to Adrianne Altera at the top of the circle who then found Beatty for her fifth goal of the season.   Arcadia controlled possession throughout the first half but the Giants made the most of their limited opportunities and tied the game at 1-all at 22:34 when Brackney Brotzman fed Kelsey Drozda for the equalizer.  The two teams would enter halftime with the score knotted at 1-1.

In the second half, the Knights received strong play from Claire Duborow (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) who held down the right back side with solid defensive play.  First year Ashley Ditchey (Nicholson, PA/Lackawana Trail) contributed smart play and hustle through the midfield in her homecoming.  Senior forwards Ashley Griffith (Cape May, NJ/Cape May Regional) and Caroline Champi (Laflin, PA/Pittston Area) drew watchful eyes of the Giant defenders and were relentless working the left side of the field, while Beatty worked to create offensive opportunities with her speed and ball handling.  Sophomore Lauren Altera (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) was a solid presence in the midfield with no bigger stop than late in overtime as she saved a ball played off an Arcadia corner from bouncing into the open midfield.   Junior Melissa McNamee (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) was also a presence in addition to strong supportive play from Arcadia's bench.

With the score knotted at one, Griffith would break the stalemate with the go-ahead score for the Knights.  It would come unassisted in the 42nd second minute following a scrum in front of Keystone keeper Melinda Moore and it was the senior's fourth goal of the season.  Keystone kept at it and seven minutes later were rewarded with a goal off a corner from Lori Ann Marino that tied the game with 21 minutes to play.

With no winner following 70 minutes of regulation, the two teams sent seven players aside to the field for the extra stanza.  Senior Ashley McCarthy (Norristown, PA/Norristown Area), the last line of defense before sophomore keeper Sara Baumgardner (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland), played spoiler to Keystone's attempts to break into the offensive zone with solid stick work and defensive positioning.  Moore would press on an Arcadia offensive rush and cause her team to watch as the Knights were awarded a penalty stroke with six minutes to play in OT.  Adrianne Altera shot left around Moore and hit the inside of the post but the goal was disallowed.  With the Giants continuing to knock on the doorstep, Baumgardner remained poised making a handful of point blank stops and controlling the rebounds.  Making a diving blocker and stick save from post to post on a Giant would be game winner, Baumgardner turned the momentum back to the Knights.  Appearing as if the game would head into a second overtime segment, Griffith found herself one on one with Moore in the closing seconds, with the keeper making a game deciding miscue as Arcadia was awarded their second penalty stroke in OT.  Head coach Erin Livingston again called upon the elder Altera and this time there was no mistake about it, as she sent her shot high and to the left past Moore, inside the post and into the back of the cage for the game winner.

Marissa Perez (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) made 1 stop through the first 50 minutes of regulation before being relieved by Baumgardner who made 4 stops through 34:28 to earn her first win of the season.  Moore finished with 7 saves for the Giants who fall to 2-4 overall.

Arcadia will take on the Aggies this Monday at 4 PM on Blankley Field.  The Aggies handed the Knights a 2-0 loss in Doylestown a season ago.
