Knights travel to Alvernia to open Commonwealth play

GLENSIDE, PA:  (Sept. 24, 2010) -  Commonwealth Conference play begins tomorrow as Arcadia Field Hockey travels to Alvernin the league since joining in 2008 and would like to avenge last season's 1-0 loss at home to the Crusaders.  ia University to take on the Crusaders at 1PM.  Live stats will be available at game time.  Arcadia (5-3 overall) is looking for their first win Both teams will be vying to snap a two-game losing skid when they meet on Saturday.  The Crusaders (4-3 overall) have played a pair of ranked opponents this week, losing both, a 3-1 loss to #12 TCNJ on Sept. 17 and a 2-1 loss in double overtime to #9 Eastern on Sept. 23.  The Knights dropped a pair of home non-league games to Delaware Valley on Sept. 20 by a 2-1 margin and a 2-0 loss to King's on Sept. 22. 

The Knights will try to contain Alvernia's Tonya Rutt, who lead the Crusaders with 13 points.  Samantha Landis (12 pts.) and Kyle Dillman (10 pts.) round out Alvernia's top scorers while keeper Abby Eby (4-3) sports a 1.66 goals against average. 

The Knights, who lead the league in shots per game and defensive saves, sport two scorer's among the league's top ten.  Senior Adrianne Altera (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) who has a team leading 18 points, is tied for 4th in scoring and is 2nd in assists while sophomore Marilyn Beatty (Chalfont, PA/North Penn) is tied for 9th in scoring and tied for 4th in assists.  Senior Ashley McCarthy (Norristown, PA/Norristown) leads the league in defensive saves with 6 of the team's league leading 8.  Junior Ashley Griffith (Cape May, NJ/Cape May Regional) rounds out the Knight's top scorer's with 8 pts.   A pair of sophomore keepers split action this week.  Marissa Perez (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) (4-1 overall) and Sara Baumgardner (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) (1-2 overall) own respective 1.45 and 1.11 goals against averages. 

The two teams generate the most corner opportunties among thier league opponents, however, capitalizing on those opportunities has been a shortcoming for both.  The Knights have converted on just 4 of a league leading 100 corner attempts while the Crusaders have made good on 1 of 75 attempts.  The Knights are outshooting their opponents 167-72, and outscoring them 21-11 while Alvernia has outscored their opponents 18-13. 

Following Saturday's road contest, the Knight return home for two-game stretch to include games against DeSales (Sept. 29) and league opponent Shenandoah (Oct. 2).
