Knights Snap Two-Year League Winless Streak and Spoil E'town's Post-Season Bid

Glenside, Pa., Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011– Finding themselves down by 15 points three-quarters of the way through the first half, the Arcadia University men's basketball team (6-18 Overall 1-13 Commonwealth) fought valiantly the rest of the way, leading to an upset victory over the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College (16-8 Overall 7-7 Commonwealth) by a score of 85-84. The win knocks the Blue Jays out of the postseason and snaps a 32-game conference losing streak for the Knights that dated back to January 31, 2009. The win is also Arcadia's first home win of the season and first since January 27, 2010. The Blue Jays and Knights split their season series following a 79-61 win for Elizabethtown in early December at their home court.

The Blue Jays opened the game on two foul shots from Joe Flanagan, but the Knights responded on an early trey from usual suspect, Damien Palantino 'GR. E'town was able to use a couple of baskets to jump out to a 13-6 lead at the 12:33 mark, increasing that led to double digits at 22-10 with 8:59 to go in the half. Arcadia looked helpless to respond, allowing E'town to add to their lead throughout the half increasing it to 15 at the 5:08 mark. The lmargin stayed in the double digits until a Colin McCarthy '12 foul shot brought the lead down to nine. McCarthy followed that up with a layup and a three pointer to put the Knights to within six. E'town added onto their lead and was able to go into the locker room at halftime up 43-36. The Blue Jays used 55.6 percent shooting from the field (15-27 FG) along with 10 free throws in 13 chances to create their halftime 15 point halftime advantage. They also outscored the Knights in the paint by a 22-8 margin. Arcadia did their best to stay in the game, shooting 13-29 from the field for 44.8 percent and sunk six three pointers. The Knights' bench also outscored the Blue Jays 18-6, with McCarthy ending the first half in double figures with 10 points.

E'town continued suit in the early second half, growing their lead to 51-42 at the 17:41 mark.  Arcadia was not ready to give up as they attacked the Blue Jays on the offensive end going on an 15-4 run capped by a steal by junior Jason Thompson, which was then followed by a McCarthy steal and subsequent layup. From that point on both teams battled back and forth resulting in four ties until the Knights found themselves up a team high nine points with 3:29 to go in the game.  Elizabethtown, fighting for their playoff lives, was not ready to go down quietly and jumped back at Arcadia cutting the Knight's lead to three at 83-80 with 45 seconds to go. The Blue Jays then forced a Palantino turnover and cut the lead to one with 33 seconds remaining on the clock. A McCarthy turnover followed, resulting in a put back by Elizabethtown's Bryan Harrity giving the Blue Jays their first lead since 10:54 of the half. In the Knights' last possession, Palantino missed a trey with 15 seconds to go but was followed up by a Rashon Brock '14 offensive rebound that kept the possession alive. Palantino would erase the memory of the previous turnover when he powered back up for two, proving to be the game winner after Elizabethtown was unable to put the ball in the basket in their last possession. The Knights outscored the Blue Jays 49-41 for the half shooting an impressive 54.8 percent from the field including an additional six three-pointers giving them 12 for the game. The Knights' bench also outscored the Blue Jays 21-2 in the half. The second half also featured five lead changes and five ties.

Palantino, playing in his final collegiate game of his career dedicated his senior day performance and his game winning shot to his Aunt, Amelia Palantino-Ivione, who is currently is the hospital battling Leukemia.  "My Aunt Meal has attended several of my Arcadia games in the past, follows the game recaps online frequently, and I know she would have loved to come to today's Senior Day game if she was physically able," Palantino reveals.  "She is one of my biggest fans and I can't wait for her to feel better!"  Palantino finished the game with a team high 27 points on 10-22 shooting, including five treys giving him 215 for his career. He also finishes with 943 points and 119 assists for his career. Fellow senior Darrell Mills contributed two points coming off a ciritcal pair of free throws late in the game to keep the Knights ahead on the scoreboard and pulled down five rebounds. Senior Alexis Alfonso also added two points and an assist. McCarthy came off the bench and put up 20 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out four assists in 29 minutes of play. Thompson put up 11 points including three treys and dished out a team high six assists. First year player first-year Eric O'Hora put up the best game of his young career accumulating 11 points and according to the coaching staff, “seemed to everywhere on the defensive end of the court.”  The Blue Jays were paced by 32 points from Joe Flanagan, tying a career high for the senior, as well as 17 points from senior Bryan Harrity.

Coach Patrick Dorney, excited for the Knights' first conference win since 2009, noted that the victory was a culmination for the hard work by the Knights all season. The win for Dorney, “was a great way for our three seniors to end their MAC careers and can be attributed to their determination not to deviate from the Knights' concept of play all four years of their careers.”  Arcadia will take to the court one more time this season as they look to end the year on a two game winning streak as they welcome Berkeley College of New Jersey to the Kuch Center Feb. 21. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
