Softball Sunday Sweep

GLENSIDE, Pa., Sunday, April 10, 2011-- Arcadia University defeated Briarcliff College this afternoon, 10-1 in the opener and 8-0 in the second game of the Sunday afternoon double header. In the first game the Knights jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning, and finished the game in the bottom of the fifth with a walk-off two run double from the bat of first-year Stacie Borell for the 10-1 final. In the second game Arcadia used a six-run bottom of the fourth inning to notch a five inning victory.

In game one the Knights used a bases clearing 2-RBI triple off the bat of senior Virginia Buchel to jump out to an early lead. Junior Amy Johnson, after the previous batter reached base on an error would come up to bat next with runners on second and third, and delivered a single to score two more Knights for a four-run lead after the first. After both teams went scoreless in the second inning the Knights would score two more runs in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI double by junior Lindsey Henchinski to cap a four-run inning increasing their lead to 8-0.

With the mercy rule in sight the Knights were looking to shut-down Briarcliff as fast as possible without allowing their opponent a run. However after a scoreless fourth, Briarcliff would get a home run to dead center field cutting the Arcadia lead to 8-1 entering the bottom of the fifth. Arcadia needing two runs to end the game, started off the inning with a lead-off single from first-year Jessica Wood. Wood would steal second to put a runner in scoring position. First-year Ashley John would reach base on an error by the Briarcliff infield, putting two runners on base for Borell. Not wasting the opportunity Borell would lace a double into left-center field scoring two, and winning the opener 10-1.

The second game started off a little slow for the Knights as they were able to post a 2-0 advantage throught the first four innings, however the pitching and defense held strong not allowing a Briarcliff runner to advance past second. Heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Arcadia would need to post a six spot in order to end the game in five if they were able to post three outs in the top of the inning, and the Knights came out focused wanting to accomplish just that. Sophomore Melissa Perez got the innning started off with a triple to center field putting the Knights in business. Sophomore Corrin Showalter singled to score Perez and increase the Arcadia lead to 3-0. Arcadia would manufacture four more runs in the inning used good placement on hits, and untimely fielding mistakes by Briarcliff. Henchinski and Buechel would both deliever RBI hits to secure the game for the Knights.

Arcadia will return to the field Thursday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden for a double-header. With the two wins this afternoon Arcadia improves to 17-6 on the season
