Knights take care of Giants to win season's first

Molly Goldstein '15 scores the game winner vs. Keystone
GLENSIDE, Pa.:  Arcadia University Field Hockey sandwiched two goals around one score from Keystone College to win their first game of the 2011 campaign this afternoon in the team's home opener at Blankley Field, topping the Giants 2-1 in non-conference play.  Arcadia has defeated Keystone by a one-goal differential for the past two seasons.

Arcadia senior Melissa McNamee (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) knocked in a pass from junior Marilyn Beatty (Chalfont, PA/North Penn) in the 6th minute to give the Knights a little breathing room with a 1-0 advantage.  The goal for McNamee was her first of the season.

The score stood at a standstill until the opening minutes of the second half when Keystone (1-4 overall, 0-1 CSAC) converted on a corner attempt to knot the score at 1-1.  Samantha Morgan assisted on the goal by Hope Krolewski, who leads the Giants in scoring.

Arcadia (1-7 overall) nearly made it 2-1 in the 63rd minute when first year Molly Goldstein (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.), left alone at the post, had her point blank shot robbed by Keystone keeper Mary Grace Piazza.  But 16 seconds later there was no denying Goldstein her first collegiate tally, as first year Morgan Paese (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) made a cross to Goldstein for the go-ahead score.  Keystone was awarded one last shot at forcing overtime when, with no time remaining, the Giants received a corner attempt that was denied by the Arcadia defense.

There weren't many scoring opportunities to be had, with shots 8-5 in Arcadia's favor.  Keystone attempted to ward off Arcadia's starting lineup, each playing the full 70 minutes, with a rotation of fresh legs, but the Giants could not deny the Knights what was meant to be.

Arcadia junior keeper Sarah Baumgardner (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) earned her first win of the season, making 4 stops.  Piazza made 3 for the losing Giants.

The Knights will use this long-awaited victory to jumpstart the opening of Commonwealth Conference play when they host the Alvernia University Crusaders this Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
