Trio in double-figures in loss to Alvernia

Box Score READING, Pa.:  Jenna Crothers '14 and Victoria Roukas '15 scored 18 points apeice while Christine Taylor '12 netted 15 but host Alvernia University was able to pull away from the Knights late in the second half, making the most of their second-chance opportunities under the glass to defeat Arcadia 95-73 in tonight's Commonwealth Conference women's basketball matchup.

Angela Altemose scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Katie Yoh and Allie Toczylowski scored 14 apeice for the Crusaders (6-6, 1-2 CC).

While the Crusaders scored a season-high with tonight's win, it would be the first time this season they would allow an opponent 73 points, which came from Arcadia's 40% and 71% shooting effort from the floor and free throw stripe respectively.

After Alvernia jumped out to a 7-0 lead, the Knights' Victoria Roukas converted a three-point play to make it 9-4 Alvernia.  Arcadia showed plenty of grit, ten times erasing Alvernia's double-digit advantage, the first coming from a pair of made charity tosses from junior Angie Adams at 14:41 of the opening half.

Alvernia took an 11 point lead with 13:06 to go and again the Knights responded with buckets by Roukas, two from Crothers and one from Taylor to climb back within 4, 20-16 with 11:08 before the break. Three straight buckets from sophomore Victoria Mazzeo kept Arcadia in the game and with 1:39 to play, Arcadia was behind by just 5, 41-36 when the Crusaders caught fire.  Scoring 5 straight buckets in the lane, the Crusaders closed the final minute of the half with a 10-0 run to go up 51-37 at the break.

Arcadia (3-9, 0-3 CC) clawed their way back to within 8 off of a three-ball and jump shot combination from Crothers at the 13 minute mark.  Alvernia's lead remained 8 with 8:41 remaining when Jackie Law '13 scored two of her 7 points but the Knights would get no closer. Law would lead the Knights with 12 rebounds.

Alvernia got 24 points from their bench and 14 off of second-chance put-backs in the paint to finish shooting 44.9% from the field.  Arcadia shot 40% from the field but struggled from downtown, shooting just 1 of 13 from long-range.

Commonwealth Conference play continues this Saturday as the Knights move on to host Lycoming College at the Kuch Center at 1 p.m.
