WILKES-BARRE, PA: Overcast skies and threats of rain welcomed Arcadia University Women's Tennis to Kirby Park where they met host King's College in today's non-conference match. After a tough set-back in Commonwealth play just a day ago, the Knights rallied and took the Lady Monarchs all the way to a match-deciding doubles set but came up empty, with King's winning 5-4.
Due to the weather conditions the teams opened the day with singles competition where they played pro-sets. The Knights dominated the middle of the singles lineup with wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, while the Lady Monarchs went on to win at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6.
The Knights three singles points came via Beth Osipowitz '12 strolling past Diana Darby 8-3 at No. 2 Singles, Kaila Gaughan '15 easing by Emily Biffen 8-1 at No. 3 while Jasmine Peake '14 also posted an 8-1 triumph at No. 4 Singles, defeating Liz Demko 8-1.
Dominique Canale '15 lost her No. 1 Singles set to King's Sara Lynn 3-8, Danielle Riggins '14 dropped her No. 5 Singles set 3-8 to Nicole Molino while Latyoya Fluker '14 was defeated 1-8 by Katlyn Rossowski at No. 6.
Osipowitz and doubles partner Gaughan worked King's No. 1 Doubles tandem Sara Lynn/Diana Darby in the tighest doubles match of the day, with the Knight's duo finishing as 8-6 victors. Needing to win one of the next two doubles sets, Arcadia would come up just short allowing the Lady Monarchs (4-9 overall) the one-point decision.
Paired at No. 2, Peake and Canale fell to King's Emily Biffen/Liz Demko 2-8. Etka Butala '14 and Nicole Vo '14 were defeated at No. 3 Doubles, 1-8 by King's Nicole Molino/Katlyn Rossowski.
Arcadia (1-6, 0-1 CC) aims to even their Commonwealth Conference record when they host the Lions of Albright College this Thursday at 3:30 p.m. on the Weiss Tennis Courts.
