Second Half Comeback Gives Men’s Basketball Team 90-84 Win over DeSales

Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team outscored visiting DeSales University 51-33 in the second half to overcome a 51-39 halftime deficit and pull out a 90-84 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Knights improved to 2-1 with the victory, while the preseason Freedom Conference favorite Bulldogs fell to 3-1 with their first setback of the season.

Junior guard Travis Saltus (Teaneck, N.J.) scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, while sophomore guard John Landro (Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.) netted 11 of his 15 points in the second frame to lead Arcadia's comeback. Saltus was 5-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in the second half, while Landro was 3-6 from the floor, 2-for-4 from downtown and 3-for-3 at the line. Both also totaled three rebounds and two assists.

Junior forward Joe Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field to go with four rebounds, two assists and three steals, while junior guard Aaron Lee-Webb (Norristown, Pa.) dropped in 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field and a 3-for-4 performance from three with six assists.

Sophomore forward Cody Deal (Palmyra, Pa.) scored a game-high 23 points with eight boards to lead DeSales. He was 7-of-10 from the floor, 4-for-6 from three and 5-for-6 at the line. Senior guard Mike Coleman (Edgewood, Md.) scored 17 points while grabbing six rebounds. Fellow senior guard Kyle Hash (Phillipsburg, N.J.) scored 15 points, making each of his four attempts from the field and going 7-for-8 at the line.

The Knights trailed for most of the first half after getting out to an early 6-3 lead and trailed by as many as 14 in the period after Hash's free throws with 25 seconds left in the half put the Bulldogs ahead 51-37.

Arcadia came out on fire to start the second half, opening the period with a 16-3 run and regaining the lead off freshman guard Ryan Kelley's (Mt. Arlington, N.J.) that gave the Knights a 55-54 advantage five minutes into the frame.

Play went back and forth from there and DeSales led by one after junior guard Jake Hungarter (Nazareth, Pa.) put in a layup to give the Bulldogs a 76-75 lead with 5:49 left in the game, but junior guard Torrell Candelaria (Philadelphia, Pa.) answered with a three on the ensuing trip down the floor to start an 8-0 that put the Knights in the lead for good.

It was just a two-point game, 86-84, after Hash went 1-for-2 at the line with 39 seconds to go, but that was as close as DeSales would get as Landro drained a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to go and Brown streaked to the hoop for a layup with nine seconds left after Coleman's missed three for the 90-84 final.

Arcadia shot 52 percent (34-65) from the field and 52 percent (14-27) from three in the game, while the Bulldogs shot 54 percent (26-48) from the floor and 37 percent (7-19) from three.

Free throw shooting kept DeSales in the game. The Bulldogs were 25-of-36 overall and hit 15-of-22 attempts in the second half. The Knights were just 8-of-16 from the stripe in the game.

Arcadia will next travel to defending Freedom Conference champion Delaware Valley College Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
