Box Score READING, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team had two chances at the game-winning shot in the closing seconds of the game, but neither would fall as the Knights dropped an 85-84 heartbreaker at Albright College in a Commonwealth Conference contest.
Freshman guard Sameen Swint (Sicklersville, N.J.) drove to the basket and put in the game-winning layup for the Lions (2-3, 1-1 CC) with just seven seconds left on the clock, but Arcadia (3-2, 1-1 CC) had a pair of quality chances after calling a timeout. Junior guard
Aaron Lee-Webb (Norristown, Pa.) attempted a jumper off the timeout that was off the mark and junior forward
Joe Brown's (Philadelphia, Pa.) put back attempt just before the final buzzer sounded also wouldn't fall, giving Albright the win.
The Knights led for most of the second half and led 82-76 after junior guard Travis Saltus (Teaneck, N.J.) drained a three with 2:38 to go, but could not hold on. Arcadia was up 84-81 after junior forward
Jose Figueroa's (Philadelphia, Pa.) lay in with 1:18 left, but senior forward Kyle Jordan (Bowie, Md.) had a quick answer for the Lions with a layup of his own just eight seconds later, setting the stage for Swint's game-winner.
Brown notched a double-double with game-high totals of 19 points and 11 rebounds to go with three assists for the Knights, while Saltus also poured in a game-high 19 points with five boards and four assists. Lee-Webb scored 13 points with five assists and four rebounds, while Figueroa finished with 12 points and five boards.
Swint led five Lions that scored in double-figures with a game-high 19 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Jordan tallied 16 points with six boards and three blocks. Senior guard/forward Pedro Perez (Bethlehem, Pa.) filled the box scored with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Senior guard Sam Marella (Sinking Spring, Pa.) netted 11 points and dished out five assists, while sophomore center Calvert Gantz (Lancaster, Pa.) was just short of a double-double with 10 points, eight boards and a game-high six blocks.
Arcadia was just 13-of-23 at the free throw line, while the Lions were sank 15 of their 19 attempts at the stripe. Albright was also more efficient from the field overall, shooting 53 percent (33-62) to the Knights (43 percent (32-75). Arcadia had a decided advantage from three, going 7-of-16 from long distance while the Lions were just 4-of-19.
The Knights will look to bounce back when they return to Alumni Gymnasium Saturday to host a 3 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest against Stevenson University. There will be free popcorn and a halftime game featuring McCloskey Elementary School and a performance by the McCloskey Elementary School cheerleaders.
