Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team dropped an 87-81 double-overtime decision to visiting Stevenson University Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Conference contest at Alumni Gymnasium. The Mustangs improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Knights fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 on conference action with the loss.
Stevenson led for most of regulation and seemed to have control of the game after an 8-0 gave it a 49-34 lead seven minutes into the second half. The Mustangs led by 11 after senior guard Alfonzo Hawkins (Baltimore, Md.) sank a pair of free throws midway through the period to make it 53-42, but Arcadia came storming back, using a 12-1 run that was capped by a three-ball from sophomore guard
John Landro (Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.) to knot the score at 54-all with 6:40 to go in the second half.
The lead changed hands several times from there and Stevenson found itself up by four with 16 seconds to go in the frame after a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Christian Robert (Silver Spring, Md.). Arcadia junior forward
Joe Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.) quickly answered with a layup at the other end eight seconds later and Hawkins was immediately fouled on the inbounding play. He then missed both of his free throws and Brown collected the ball following his second miss.
Brown immediately fed the ball to junior guard
Aaron Lee-Webb (Norristown, Pa.), who went coast-to-coast and put down the game-tying layup with three-tenths of the second on the clock. He was fouled as he laid the ball in, but missed the free throw that followed and the game went to overtime.
Neither team was able to break a 76-76 deadlock over the final 1:40 of the first overtime, sending the game to a second overtime where the Mustangs closed the game with a 7-0 run over the final 1:45 of the frame to record the win.
Junior forward Justin Kuntz (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down a game-high 17 boards to lead Stevenson to the win. Hawkins finished the game with 17 points, while senior forward Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla.) and freshman forward Ryan Hill (Charleston, S.C.) added 11 points each.
Webb scored a team-best 19 points with six boards and three assists to lead the Knights, while freshman guard
Ryan Kelley (Mt Arlington, N.J.) netted 13 points with three rebounds and three steals off the bench. Brown recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-best 14 rebounds, while junior forward
Jose Figueroa (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 12 points with 13 boards for a double-double of his own. Brown also had five assist and a game-high six blocked shots.
Arcadia will look to snap its two-game slide Thursday when it travels to Rutgers-Newark for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
