Men’s Basketball Rally Falls Short in 70-59 Setback to Elizabethtown

Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team pulled within two after trailing by as many as 13 in the second half, but could not complete the comeback as Elizabethtown College pulled away at the free throw line to record a 70-59 Commonwealth Conference win over the Knights Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Blue Jays improved to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play with the win, while Arcadia fell to 6-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play with their third straight loss.

Junior center Lee Eckert (Lancaster, Pa.) scored a game-high 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field to lead Elizabethtown, while senior center Andrew Mantz (Sunbury, Pa.) netted 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and a 5-for-6 showing at the line. Both pulled down eight rebounds in the game. Junior guard Phil Wenger (Lancaster, Pa.) had a good all-around game with 12 points, eight assists, five boards and two steals.

Junior guard Torrell Candelaria (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 11 points with three assists and two steals coming off the bench for Arcadia. Junior forward Joe Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior guard Aaron Lee-Webb (Norristown, Pa.) and freshman guard Justin Trojanowski (Reading, Pa.) added 10 points each.

The Knights trailed most of the game, going into the locker room at the half down 32-22 before going down 37-24 in the opening minute of the second half. Arcadia then outscored the Blue Jays 19-5 over the next seven and a half minutes to take their first lead since Trojanowski scored the first basket of the game, 43-42 with 11:31 to go. Elizabethtown then went on a 10-0 run to regain the lead for good.

The Knights used an 8-2 burst to make it a two-point game, 58-56, with 4:10 remaining, but that was as close as they'd get the rest of the way as the Blue Jays went 8-for-8 at the line in the final 1:41 to close out the game.

Elizabethtown shot 48 percent (27-56) from the field to Arcadia's 40 (23-57), and outscored the Knights 46-28 in the paint.

Arcadia will next travel to Messiah College for a 5 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest.
