20-point performances by Brown and Candelaria propel men’s basketball over Penn State-Abington, 98-87

ABINGTON, Pa. – Senior forward Joe Brown and senior guard Torrell Candelaria both put up 20-point scoring performances to give the Arcadia University men's basketball team to a 98-87 non-conference win over host Penn State-Abington Tuesday evening. The Knights improved to 3-2 overall with the win, while the Nittany Lions fell to 0-3.
 
Brown poured in 24 points on 11 of 14 shooting from the field while registering seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Candelaria finished the game with 23 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field and a 10 for 11 performance at the line to go with seven boards, three assists and two steals. Junior guard John Landro fell just shy of a 20-point game as he scored 19 on 7 of 11 shooting from the field and pulled down six boards.
 
Dequan Jackson dropped in a game-high 28 points while going 11 of 17 from the field and 5 of 7 at the line to go with a game-high nine rebounds, while Max Alton netted 23 points on 7 of 17 shooting from the floor while also going 5 of 7 at the line. Devin Jones also finished in double figures for Abington with 10 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
 
The lead changes hands several times in the opening half before a five-point burst gave the Nittany Lions a 33-32 lead following a three from Alton with 3:11 left in the period. The Knights regained the lead of good on the trip that followed down the floor on a layup from Brown, which started a 10-2 run that put Arcadia ahead 42-35 at the half.
 
It was a four-point game after Jones drained a pair of free throws to cut was once a 12-point Arcadia lead to 58-54. The Knights would gradually pull away and led by as many as 15, 91-76 with three minutes to go after a three-point play from Brown.
 
Arcadia shot 55 percent (36-66) from the field, while Abington shot 46 percent (32-70) from the floor.
 
The Knights will return to action Sunday when they host William Paterson University at 3 p.m. at Alumni Gymnasium.
