Box Score DALLAS, Pa. – The fifth-seeded Arcadia University softball team was eliminated from the 2014 ECAC Division III South Championship Tournament, hosted by Misericordia University, after falling 5-4 to third-seeded Alvernia University Saturday. The Knights ended the season with a record of 21-23.
This marked the final game for head coach Linda Detra, who announced this would be her final season earlier this season. She capped of her career with a record of 445-306-1 (.592) in her 21 seasons leading the Knights.
Senior
Jessica Wood (Columbus, N.J.) staked Arcadia to an early lead with a three run blast down the left field line in the top of the first, but that advantage didn't last for long as junior Shannon Grim (Williamstown, N.J.) answered with a three-run shot of her own for the Crusaders (23-15) in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at 3-3.
Alvernia took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third. Grim drove in senior Samantha Penk (Lincroft, N.J.) with a single to left and then came around to score the eventual game-winning run on junior Felicia McKenna's (Williamstown, N.J.) RBI-single to left.
The Knights pulled back within one when senior
Amanda Tomaschek (Toms River, N,J.) lined a sharply hit single to center to plate sophomore
Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick, N.J.) in the top of the fourth, but Arcadia was unable to pull even.
The Knights had runners on first and second with one out in the third when sophomore
Alicia McMahon (Bel Air, Md.) grounded into a double play with a hard hit ball to the shortstop. Arcadia then had runners on first and second with no outs in the fifth before senior
Leanda Helms (Topton, Pa.) grounded into a double play on a hard hit ball to Grim who snagged the ball just off the bag at third and McMahon grounded out on another sharply hit ball to end the inning.
Freshman Brianna Fisher (Erial, N.J.) improved to 7-2 in the circle after giving up four runs on eight hits in three innings. Grim went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored in the game. McKenna went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI.
Gunia took the loss in the circle for the Knights after allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits in three innings. Classmate
Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa.) allowed just one hit with four strikeouts over the final three innings. Wood finished the game 2-for-2 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored.
