GLENSIDE, Pa. – Junior guard
John Landro scored 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting from both the field and from the free throw line while grabbing 10 rebounds as the Arcadia University men's basketball team rolled to a 66-49 Commonwealth Conference victory over visiting Lebanon Valley College Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Knights improved to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in conference play with the win, while earning a split of the season series with the Dutchmen (11-10, 5-7 CC), who fell for the sixth time in seven games.
Arcadia opened the game with a 14-4 run that was capped by a layup from senior forward
Joe Brown and never looked back on its way to snapping a two-game slide and improving to 7-3 at home this season. The Knights closed the opening frame with a 17-4 surge to double up LVC at the half, 36-18, and led by as many as 21 in the second following a bucket from Landro that made it 51-30 just under eight minutes into the period.
Freshman Ricky Bugg scored off the opening tip for LVC for its only lead of the game. Senior center
Jose Figueroa tied the game on the ensuing possession before a Brown free throw gave the Knights the lead for good.
The Dutchmen pulled within 10 after outscoring Arcadia 19-8 over a span of 10:20 in the second half to make it a 10-point game, 59-49 with 1:57 to go, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way. That comeback attempt started and ended with baskets from senior forward Luke Berguson before the Knights scored seven straight points at the line to close out the game.
Brown finished the game with a team-high 16 points while pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out three assists, while senior guard
Torrell Candelaria poured in 14 points. Figueroa fell just one rebound shot of a double-double as he totaled 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the floor while grabbing nine boards.
Senior guard Kevin Agnew scored a game-high 17 points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Dutchmen, while Berguson and sophomore guard Zach Mrozek added 10 points each.
Arcadia shot an efficient 44 percent (25-57) from the field while holding the Dutchmen to just 34 percent (18-53) shooting from the floor in the game.
The Knights will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to first-place Lycoming College for an 8 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest.
