Arcadia Takes Down Messiah 3-2 to Open Three Game Series

PHILIDELPHIA, Pa. - The Arcadia University baseball team pulled out a 3-2 Commonwealth Conference win today at Erny Field over Messiah College. The win gives Arcadia a 7-3 overall record and a 4-1 record in the conference. Messiah College drops to 4-8 on the season and 3-4 in conference play.

Sophomore Jordan Draude started off the bottom of the second inning taking a hit by pitch to put him on base. Junior Conner Arsenault then stepped into the batter's box and drove a single through the right side to put Draude in scoring position at third base. Draude then scored the first run of the game as both runners then advanced on a throwing error, and Arsenault came home from second on junior George Pagan's RBI-single to right field.

In the bottom of the fifth inning senior Andonis Yiantsos hit a double to get things started for the Knights. Two batters later, junior Nick Todero sent a single to left center driving in Yiantsos from second to make to extend the Knights' lead to 3-0.

The sixth inning brought some light to Messiah as junior Joseph Saufley was hit by a pitch and then scored all the way from first as freshman Kyle Schoen stepped to the plate and drove double to deep right center with two outs in the inning. Messiah climbed back within one run in the seventh when senior Jon Heisey  scored from second on senior Zach Brubaker's double to right center after drawing a leadoff walk to make the score 3-2.

That was the last run that would be scored in the contest as senior Jason Goldberg capped off a strong seven-inning performance by striking out junior Ben Sollenberger to end the inning. Goldberg finished with five strikeouts as his record improved to 2-0 on the season. Senior Justin Simpson tossed the final two innings to close the game, striking out Griffitts to complete the game.

This was game one of a three game series with Messiah. Arcadia travels to Grantham Saturday for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader starting at noon.
