Slow Start Costs Women’s Basketball Team in 65-45 Loss at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Host Stevenson University scored the first 15 points of the game and never looked back as the Arcadia University women's basketball team fell on the road, 65-45, in a MAC Commonwealth matchup. The Mustangs improved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play with the win, while the Knights dropped to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in league action.

Arcadia finally got on the board with 4:40 left in the first quarter as senior Valerie DiMuro converted a layup as she was fouled and drained the free throw that followed. The Knights later trailed 21-9 after the opening period, and 33-20 at halftime.

Stevenson led  by 12 after a Sara Tarbert layup made it 36-24 early in the third quarter before junior Imani Alston knocked down a jumper to start a 7-0 run that brought Arcadia back within five. Senior Addy Crenny added a pair of free throws before freshman Sammy Downham drained a three to cut the Knights deficit to 36-31 with 3:26 left in the third.

That was as close as Arcadia would get the rest of the way as the Mustangs closed the third quarter with an 8-2 run before outscoring the Knights 21-12 in the final frame to secure the win.

Tarbert finished with a game-high 30 points on 12 of 19 shooting from the field to go with 12 rebounds as Stevenson shot 50 percent (25-50) from the field in the game. Jonyae Curry and Stephanie Martinez finished with nine points and three rebounds each.

DiMuro posted a double-double to lead Arcadia, which shot just 28 percent (18-65) from the floor, totaling 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Alston finished with nine points. Freshman Olivia Roseman chipped in with eight points and three rebounds.

The Knights will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Alvernia University for a 6 p.m. MAC Commonwealth contest.
