YORK, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday night 74-69 to Eastern to open the 10th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament held at York College. The loss dropped the Knights 1-1 on the season, while Easter moved to 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights got off to a solid start, after senior
Maureen Fiocca took the opening tip to the hole for the game's first points. On the ensuing inbounds, sophomore
Olivia Roseman stole the ball near half court and was fouled on the way to the bucket, she made one of two free throws for the early 3-0 lead. After the Eagles opened a 12-7 lead with 5:53 to go in the first quarter, the Knights ended the frame on an 11-4 run for an 18-16 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
Eastern immediately tied the game at 18 to open the second quarter; however nine of the next 11 points went to Arcadia, which opened its largest lead of the contest at seven. Fiocca and classmate
Imani Alston combined for the first four points of the run before Roseman deposited the last five with a three and a fast break layup with 5:29 left until the half. The score at the break was 33-27 in favor of the Knights.
The Eagles controlled the third quarter, outscoring Arcadia 21-8, leading by as many as 11 in the stanza before taking a 48-41 lead to what proved to be a high-scoring fourth quarter. Sophomore
Susan Bossler deposited a fast break lay-in to pull within four less than a minute into the decisive quarter before the opposition got ahead by as many as 13 mid way through. Slowly chipping away at the deficit, freshman
Sydney Cyr converted on an and-one to pull the Knights within three with less than a minute to go, but the Eagles went 4-4 from the line the rest of the way to hold on for the win.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Fiocca led a trio of Knights in double-figures with 20 points. Bossler added 13 and Cyr 12. The frosh tied for a team-high five boards with senior
Imani Alston, whose four assists were also a team high.
EASTERN LEADERS: Amanda Riiff posted a game-high 23 points for the Eagles, while Regie Robinson and Emily Lavin added 18 and 16, respectively. Lavin completed the double-double with 12 rebounds while also posting a team-high five blocks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Eagles shot 47.7% (31-65) from the floor and 31.6% (6-19) from beyond the arc while going 6-9 from the free throw line. The Knights were 36.9% (24-65) from the field, 38.9% (7-18 from distance and 58.3% (14-24) from the charity stripe. Arcadia outscored Eastern off turnovers (19-10), off the bench (17-4) and on fast breaks (12-6), however Eastern netted 40 points in the paint compared to Arcadia's 28.
