Women’s Basketball Drops 82-62 Decision at Desales

Box Score CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team dropped an 82-62 decision at DeSales Wednesday night. The Knights fell to 3-3 on the season, while the Bulldogs moved to 4-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: The hosts jumped out to an early 9-4 lead before senior Imani Alston and sophomores Sammy Downham and Camille Menns netted the next six points on layups to give the Knights their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 4:25 to go in the opening quarter.  Freshman Sydney Cyr put Arcadia in front by a 17-13 margin with 23 ticks to go in the frame, before the Bulldogs' Morgan McCollian laid in two points for a 17-15 score in favor of Arcadia after one quarter.
 
Alston opened the second quarter with a three from the right wing to beat a winding down shot clock; however DeSales would outscore the Knights 26-16 in the period fueled by a 17-3 run that lasted nearly five minutes. Arcadia's deficit reached 13 with 1:29 to go before Syr and sophomore Sammy Downham combined for the last five points of the half to send the teams to the break with DeSales leading 41-33.
 
The third quarter went similar to the second, with Downham knocking down a three to open the stanza. From there the hosts went on an 8-2 run to lift its lead to 53-38 with 4:39 to go. Neither team scored more than five straight the rest of the quarter with senior Maureen Fiocca knocking down a three with 14 seconds left to make the score 62-48 in favor of the hosts heading into the fourth quarter. The teams traded short spurts to start the fourth before the hosts finished the game on a 8-6 run.
 
ARCADIA LEADERS: Downham registered a career-high 19 points on 8-12 shooting in the first start of her career. In what was a homecoming of sorts for Cyr, the Coopersburg, Pennsylvania native scored 14 points on 5-7 shooting. By scoring 10 points, Fiocca continued her streak of scoring double-figures in every game this season. Alston led the team on the glass with 10 rebounds.
 
DeSALES LEADERS: Kaitlin Kelly led all scorers with 20 points on 7-13 shooting, including 6-12 from beyond the arc. McCollian posted a double-double with 17 points and a game-best 12 rebounds.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Knights shot 40% (24-60) from the floor and 33.3% (3-6) from three while converting 10-18 free throws (55.6%). DeSales was 49.3% (33-67) from the field, but just 26.9% (7-26) from distance while converting 9-21 free throws.
