Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with 16-10 Win Against Marywood

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University women's lacrosse team opened up the 2016 season with a 16-10 win over the Marywood University Pacers on Saturday afternoon at Easton Field. Senior Dawn Faranetta led the way for the Knights, scoring a career-high seven goals, with five of them coming in the second half.

The Pacers started the game with an early 3-1 lead, after freshman Ashley Valway, and sophomores Katrina Kelly and Caitlin Watson scored in the first ten minutes of the game. However, the Knights would go on a six goal run to close the first half, starting with senior Jessica Santoli's first goal of the game and ending with sophomore Marie Brockman's second goal of the contest. That run gave the Knights a 7-4 advantage going into the second half.

Faranetta added her third goal of the game just 43 seconds into the period, starting a four-goal run to open the second frame to put the Knights up, 8-4. Faranetta scored two more times during that run, which included a goal by sophomore Nicole Hutson to go up 11-4 on the Pacers. Marywood, however, would put together a run of their own as they scored three straight goals from Valway, freshman Kylie Winton, and senior Michelle Thompson to close the gap to 12-8. Arcadia responded to the run with three straight goals, starting with sophomore Allegra Benites and ending with Faranetta's final two of the game.

Faranetta finished with seven goals and one assist, and moved into third place in career goals (167) and fourth in career points (230) after today, passing Meghan Fallon. Senior Adeline Bellesheim recorded seven assists, while Brockman tallied three goals in her Arcadia debut.

Senior Jordyn Dunacusky tallied nine saves and picked up five ground balls in the process of recording her first win of the season for the Knights.

Arcadia outshout Marywood 43-26, including a 34-19 advantage with shots on goal. The Knights held a 15-13 on draw controls, while the Pacers took a 14-13 advantage on ground balls.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday as they host a 4 p.m. non-conference match against Muhlenberg College at Easton Field.
