Baseball Drops 9-7 Decision to Kean in Puerto Rico

LAJAS, Puerto Rico - The Arcadia University baseball team lost its first game of its spring break trip Friday, dropping a 9-7 decision to Kean University at Estadio Jose Basora. The Cougars improved to 7-6 for the season with the win, while the Knights record fell to 6-3 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman Bryan Gillen doubled down the left field line to drive in classmate Nick Ponente, and then scored on junior Justin Chasmar's double to the gap in left center. That proved to be Arcadia's only lead of the game as Kean put up six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. The Cougars were up 9-4 heading into the top of the ninth, where Arcadia scored three runs with two outs and had the game-tying run on base, but Austin Arndt got senior Connor Arsenault to ground out to third to end the game.

ON THE HILL: Ian Fitzgerald earned the decision on the hill for Kean after scattering four hits and three walks over 2.2 innings of relief. Senior Jason Goldberg fell to 0-1 for the season after allowing eight runs (six earned) on 14 hits.

ARCADIA AT-BAT: Freshman Luke Hohenstein went 3 for 4 with a run scored and another driven in, while Gillen and senior Nick Todero were both 2 for 5 in the game. Gillen finished with a double, two runs scored and one RBI, while Todero had one double and a run scored. Junior Jordan Draude was 1 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

KEAN AT-BAT: Sal Taormina went 3 for 5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cougars, while Ryan Kelley was 3 for 5 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Matt Krupa went a perfect 4 for 4 at the dish, scoring one run and driving in another.

RIGHT BACK AT IT: The Knights will look to bounce back quickly, as they take on SUNY Canton for the third time in four days at approximately 3 p.m.
