CHESTER, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team was shut out in a pair of MAC Commonwealth contests at Widener University Saturday, losing game-one 3-0 and game-two 2-0. The Pride improved to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play as it rallied for the 2-1 series win, while the Knights fell to 11-8-1 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
GAME ONE: Widener 3, Arcadia 0
HOW IT HAPPEDED: The Pride scored each of its three runs in the bottom of the first inning, with two runs coming across on Greg McDonough's homer to left. Healey scored from third for the third and final run of the game as Bob Barnett was picked off at second. Arcadia had a number of quality scoring chances, but wound loading the bases in the fourth and putting a runner at second on three other occasions, but was unable to push a run across.
ON THE HILL: Josh Lafferty improved to 4-1 after tossing a six-hit shutout for the Pride, while senior
Jason Goldberg fell to 1-2 after allowing three runs on eight hits while going the distance for the Knights.
ARCADIA AT BAT: Six different batters accounted for the Knights' six hits in the game, with senior
Nick Todero accounting for the lone extra-base hit with his double to left in the top of the seventh. Freshman
Bryan Gillen reached base twice in the game, going 1 for 3 with a walk.
WIDENER AT BAT: Justin Healey had the only multi-hit game for either team, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and scoring a run. McDonough finished 1 for 3 with a two-run homer.
GAME TWO: Widener 2, Arcadia 0
HOW IT HAPPENED: McDonough drove in the only run Widener needed with his single to left in the bottom of the third that sent Nick D'Alessandro home with the first of his two runs scored in the game. He later scored on an error in the fifth. The Knights once again had their chances to score, leaving runners in scoring position four times in the game.
ON THE HILL: Joe Santone improved to 2-0 for Widener after striking out four batters in his six-hit shutout. Freshman
Joel Bartoni fell to 2-1 after going the distance for Arcadia, allowing one earned run on five hits.
ARCADIA AT BAT: Senior
Steven Zellers had two of the Knights' six hits, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Sophomore
Drew Coisson was 1 for 2 with a stolen base.
WIDENER AT BAT: McDonough went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and an RBI for the Pride, while Kyle Lowery was 1 for 3 with a double for the only extra-base hit of the contest.
