GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team used an 11-2 run between the end of the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to claim a 74-67 win over Rutgers-Camden Monday night at Alumni Gymnasium. The win improved the Knights to 7-5 on the season, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 0-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In what was a tightly contest opening 20 minutes, the largest lead of the first half was five points. Sophomore
Jordan Sanders gave the Knights that five point advantage with a three midway through the opening stanza. After the teams exchanged baskets and short runs of no more than five points, the visitors clawed back to take a one point lead at 31-30 following an Elijah Robles layup with 2:04 to go until the break. Sophomore
Phil Pierfy responded with a layup of his own to tilt the lead back to Arcadia's favor before the Scarlet Raptors laid in another two points to go back ahead by one with 1:08 to go. Pierfy would send the Knights to halftime with a 34-33 lead as he closed the half with a layup with nine ticks left on the clock.
The Pierfy layup helped open the 11-2 run that proved to be the game changer. Arcadia went 3-5 from the field and 5-6 from the charity stripe over the 4:52 of game time to open up a 43-35 lead just under four minutes into the second half. After the Scarlet Raptors managed to cut the lead to four just under two minutes later, sophomore
Kyle Reilly netted five straight points to lift the lead back to nine with 13:41 left in regulation. The lead grew to as many as 15 when sophomore
Evan Slone scored three of five straight Arcadia points, ending with a free throw for a 70-55 advantage with 2:22 left on the clock.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Slone led the way for Arcadia offensively with 18 points on 8-10 (80-%) shooting from the floor. Classmate
Josh Scott added 13 points while pulling in six rebounds and handing out three assists. Reilly led the way in rebounds with seven.
RUTGERS-CAMDEN LEADERS: Isaac Destin led all players with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Destin was joined in double figures by Keith Washington Jr with 16 points. Julian Martin led all players with seven rebounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Fueled by a 13-22 (59.1%) performance in the second half, the Knights shot 51% (26-51) from the floor including 8-19 (42.9%) from distance, while converting 16-22 (72.7%) from the free throw line. Rutgers-Camden shot 40% (24-60) from the floor on the night and 42.1% (8-19) from beyond the arc while converting 11-18 (61.1%) from the free throw line. The seven point scoring margin can be attributed to taking advantage of turnovers, as the Knights scored 21 points off 15 Scarlet Raptor turnovers, while the visitors scored 14 points of 12 Arcadia turnovers. The Knights' bench also outscored Rutgers-Camden's 20-11.
