NORTH PORT, Fla. - The Arcadia University baseball team recorded a pair of victories to start its spring break trip to Florida, posting a 5-4 walk-off win over Denison University before defeating Anderson University (Ind.) by a final count of 10-3.
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 6-2 for the season with the two victories. Denison, which is receiving votes in this week's d3baseball.com poll, fell to 3-1 following its first loss of the year, while Anderson saw its record fall to 2-7.
GAME ONE: ARCADIA 5, DENISON 4
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights trailed 4-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, and drew even on freshman
Phil Pierfy's one-out double to the left center field gap that plated senior
Jordan Draude and sophomore
Luke Hohenstein, who led off the inning with a walk and a single to left, respectively. Junior
Connor Laigaie was able to work his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth, getting Jack Blanchard to fly out to end the inning and setting the stage for Arcadia to win the game in the bottom of the frame.
Sophomore
Bryan Gillen drove a single to center to lead off the inning before being relieved by classmate
Sean Carew, who was moved over to second by senior
Justin Chasmar before Draude was intentionally walked with one out to set up a potential inning-ending double play. Hohenstein then stepped to the dish and drove a 2-1 pitch to right and Carew beat the throw to the home with the game-winning run.
The Knights led 2-1 after Hohenstein drove in Draude with a single up the middle in the bottom of the second before scoring on junior
Nick Cardace's double to the wall in right-center. The Big Red regained the lead in the top of the third on Eric Zmuda's two-RBI single up the middle. Denison grew its lead to 4-2 in the seventh after Tucker Davidson drew a bases-loaded walk.
ON THE HILL: Laigaie improved to 2-0 this season after working around a hit and four walks with two strikeouts over the final two innings. Freshman
Andrew Scholz put together a strong performance in his first collegiate start, allowing three runs with three Ks over five innings, while classmate
Jeremy Sabathne yielded an unearned run with four Ks in his two innings of relief. Connor Hanrahan fell to 0-1 with the loss for Denison after allowing one run on two hits and a walk in his 1.1 innings of work.
ARCADIA AT BAT: Hohenstein finished 3 for 5 with a two RBI and two runs scored, while Gillen was 3 for 4 with a double. Draude was 0 for 1 at the dish while drawing three walks and scoring two runs.
DENISON AT BAT: Zmuda was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Phil Papaioannou had the Big Red's only multi-hit game of the day, going 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
GAME TWO: ARCADIA 10, ANDERSON 3
HOW IT HAPPENED: Draude came up with a two-RBI single each of the first two innings to stake the Knights to an early 4-0 lead. Arcadia's lead with 5-2 before a three-run top of the sixth put the game out of reach for Anderson. Hohenstein drove in junior
Drew Coisson with a single to left before the Knights scored runs after junior
Pat Shevlin and freshman
Tyler Wisnewski were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Ravens got on the board after Branton Sanders drove in two runs with a triple to right-center field to make it 5-2 in favor of Arcadia. Kyle Otolski drove in Anderson's third run with a one-out double to left in the bottom of the ninth.
ON THE HILL: Sophomore
Joel Bartoni (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after giving up two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over his seven innings of work, while classmate
Nick Roda allowed one run on three hits with two Ks over the final two frames. Kennedy Parker fell to 0-2 after giving up five runs on seven hits in three innings.
ARCADIA AT BAT: Hohenstein finished 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and another driven in, while Draude finished 2 for 4 with four RBI and one run scored. Carew was 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored, while Coisson was 1 for 3 and scored a pair of runs. Sophomore
Nick Ponente scored two runs and delivered an RBI without the benefit of a hit.
ANDERSON AT BAT: Augdan Wilson was 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored, while Otolski was 2 for 4 with a double, and RBI and a run scored. Sanders finished 1 for 4 with two RBI.
