Softball Busts Out Brooms at Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Arcadia University softball team opened the MAC Commonwealth portion of its 2017 season with a pair of victories at Stevenson University Saturday, winning game-one 8-0 in six innings before taking game-two 8-2.
 
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 10-4 for the season with the two wins. The Mustangs fell to 3-7 with the losses, which also ran their losing streak to four games.
 
Game 1: Arcadia 8, Stevenson 0 (6 innings)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: It took just two batters before the Knights scored their first of three runs in the top of the first. After sophomore Jackie Bilotti led off with a single up the middle, she advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a single up the middle by classmate Kristin Cancelliere. Cancelliere later scored from third as freshman Mary Pat Murray stole second. Two batters later, Murray crossed the dish from second when freshman Tori Zangrilli reached on a two-out error by the second baseman.
 
The bats were just getting warmed up for Arcadia. In the top of the second, Cancelliere singled up the middle to bring home junior Kaylee Zarick, before scoring on a passed ball in the top of the fifth. With runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth, Zangrilli sent a single to center to plate junior Amanda Hess from third and Murray from second. Cancelliere's fourth hit of the day, a single to right in the top of the sixth, plated Bilotti for the final run. .
 
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Cancelliere powered the Knights' offense by going 4-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Bilotti went 2-4 and scored twice, while Hess, Zangrilli and junior Nicole Iasiello each registered a hit.
 
STEVENSON AT THE PLATE: Erin Stephy, Brooke Steinbach, Kate Finnen and Kayla Maggio each recorded a base hit.
 
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshman Kylee Schwind (5-2) threw six shutout innings, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out two. Jasmyn Ogletree (1-3) took the loss after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. Morghan Fulton allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief.
 
GAME 2: ARCADIA 8, STEVENSON 2
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: Again, the Knights bats came to life early, with Murray scoring the game's first run on a SAC fly to right field by freshman Bekah Good in the top of the second inning. The next inning, junior Amanda Hess doubled to left field to score Bilotti from second. Good went back to work in the top of the fourth, sending a two-out offering over the left field fence for her second home run of the season to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Scarlet and Grey. A Murray single up the middle scored Hess from second in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 4-0.
 
The Mustangs were able to muster up some offense in the bottom of the fifth when Ogletree led off with a home run to left field. Stephy was able to drive in Stevenson's second run with a single that brought Alli Culp home from second base. Arcadia would be quick to respond, as Good smacked her second dinger of the game with one out in the top of the fifth, before a Zangrilli double plated Iasiello from first and Murray from second in the top of the seventh.
 
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Murray led Arcadia's offense going 3-4 at the dish, with an RBI and two runs scored. Good went 2-2, with both hits being home runs, while driving in three. Hess and Zangrilli each recorded two base hits.
 
STEVENSON AT THE PLATE: Nicole Dell was 3-3 at the plate, however Ogletree (1-3) and Stephy (1-4) recorded one RBI each.
 
IN THE CIRCLE: Sophomore Kayla Resh (2-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Murray picked up her second save of the season, throwing 2.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Steinbach (0-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings of action. Fulton finished the game allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
