Colleen Stengel surpassed 1,000 career assistsTuesday night as the Arcadia University women's volleyball team battled MAC Commonwealth rival Stevenson inside a raucous Alumni Gymnasium. The Knights fell 3-1.
FOR THE RECORD: The Scarlet and Grey are now 11-5 on the year, with a 3-1 mark in league play. Stevenson, who is receiving votes in the AVCA National Poll, moved to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
STEVENSON 3, ARCADIA 1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-14)
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights fed off the hometown crowd in the first set using a dominant seven-point run to open a 13-7 advantage. Freshman
Lauren Enfield was on serve for the spurt and registered a service ace on the run's second point; up front junior
Lizzie Joseph and freshman Maddie Serht combined for a pair of big block assists. Staving off any comeback attempts from the visitors, Arcadia never surrendered that lead setting up a set clinching kill by Enfield from Stengel.
The teams were neck-and-neck throughout the second set. Trailing by a score of 10-9, the Scarlet and Grey rattled off four points, including a pair of kills from Joseph to claim a 13-10 lead before the Mustangs had a five-point run of their own to regain the lead at 16-14. The Knights never went away as they wouldn't trail by more than two down the stretch until Stevenson closed the set with three-straight points.
Stevenson used fast starts in the third and fourth sets to take the win.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Enfield tallied 10 kills, five aces and five digs on the night to lead the Arcadia offense. Stengel surpassed the 1,000 assist milestone in the fourth set, as she totaled a match-high 28 helpers; the senior also totaled 10 digs. Sophomore
Emily Eng led all players with 19 digs. In the front row, Sehrt recorded a half dozen block assists, while Joseph contributed four.
STEVENSON LEADERS: Annika Schwartz and Moriah Savage each had 13 kills to lead the Mustangs attack. Emily Castro led the team with 18 assists, with Caroline Dangel adding 16. Defensively, four players recorded double-digit digs led my Megan Hren's 15.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Knights scored 51 points on 35 kills, nine aces and seven blocks. Stevenson totaled 63 points on 48 kills, seven aces and eight blocks.
