GLENSIDE, Pa. -- Arcadia's women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium. The Knights opened play with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over No. 16 Johns Hopkins before dropping a 3-1 decision to Susquehanna.
Â
The Knights (16-5) fell behind to the No. 16 Blue Jays (14-2) 2-0 after dropping the first two sets (25-19, 25-21) then rallied with 25-22 and 25-21 wins in the third and fourth sets to pull even in the match 2-2. After falling behind 10-7 in the final set, the Knights used a 6-1 scoring run to take a 13-11 lead on a kill from
Maddie Sehrt.
Â
The Blue Jays pulled to within 14-13, but
Shannon Ryan closed out the win with a kill from
Julia Paliwodzinski. The victory marked the first-ever win over JHU for the Knights, and it is also the second year in a row that Arcadia has knocked off a ranked foe following last year's 3-2 win over then-No. 19 Eastern.
Â
Ryan and Sehrt led the Knights with 17 and 10 kills, respectively, and each posted hitting percentages over .300. Sehrt added six total blocks, Paliwodzinksi had four to go with 38 assists, and
Emily Eng posted 24 digs with a pair of service aces.
Â
Louisa Kishton led the Blue Jays with 21 kills and 28 digs, while Michelle Abt had 11 kills and 23 digs. Esther Hong had 56 assists and 10 digs, but also had 10 ball handling errors.
Â
The Knights' momentum from the first match wore off in the second as the River Hawks (16-7) posted a 19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-14 win.
Â
Tied a 10-10 in the first set, the Knights rattled off five straight points with Enfield at the service line for a 15-10 lead. SU got only as close as four the remainder of the set.
Â
Susquehanna used a 6-0 run early in the second set to take an 8-4 lead and prompt a timeout. After the stoppage, the Knights cut their deficit to three on three different occasions, the last coming at 13-10, but a 6-1 run by the River Hawks gave the visitors an 18-11 lead and enough breathing room to pull out the four-point win.
Â
Leading 16-15 in the third, the Knights watched as SU scored eight straight points to take a 23-16 lead and cruise to the win. Susquehanna closed out the match with an easy 11-point win in the fifth.
Â
Ryan and Sehrt once again led the offense with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Paliwodzinksi had 39 assists and 11 digs, Enfield led the team with 13 digs.
Â
The Knights return to action on Tuesday at Lycoming beginning at 7 p.m.
