GLENSIDE, Pa. -- The Arcadia men's basketball team's rally from a 12-point, second-half deficit came up just short in an 82-77 loss to No. 13 Swarthmore on Sunday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
Â
The Knights (3-2) shot a better percentage from the field, made more shots from the floor and committed just four turnovers in the game, but could not overcome a 14 of 29 (.483) effort from long range by the 13th-ranked Garnet (4-0).
Â
Conor Harkins' triple, one of eight he hit in the game, gave the Garnet their largest lead of the second half at 12 points (63-51) with 11:02 showing on the clock before the Scarlet & Grey came storming back with eight straight points to make it a 63-59 contest with 8:15 left.
Â
Josh Scott started the run with a pull up jumper then fed
Kishan Patel underneath for a gimme layup to make it 63-55. Following a Swarthmore turnover, Scott got in the lane for two more to cut the deficit to six, and after
Da'Kquan Davis failed to convert inside
Phil Pierfy's tip-in pulled the Knights to within four at 63-59.
Â
The Garnet seemed poised to make another run, pushing their lead back to eight (67-59) with just over six minutes to play, but a 7-2 run, capped by a
Will Derr tip-in, made it a 69-66 contest with 4:18 to play. Harkins answered with his eighth three of the game, but AU battled back to tie the game at 74-74 on a Pierfy trey with 1:10 to play.
Â
However, Swarthmore answered with yet another triple for a 77-74 lead as the clock ticked below one minute to play.
Evan Slone made 1 of 2 free throws to keep it a one-possession game, but Cam Wiley gave Swarthmore a little breathing room with a pair of charity tosses to make it 79-75 with 17 seconds left. An empty possession for AU led to two more free throws by the Garnet that gave them an 81-75 lead with seven seconds to play and essentially iced the contest.
Â
Arcadia trailed by as many as 16 in the first half, thanks in part to a 14-3 over a 2:57 stretch that saw the Garnet take a 46-30 lead with 1:50 left before the break. The Knights scored the final six points of the first half to head into the break trailing 46-36.
Â
The Knights shot 54.2 percent (32-59) from the floor, compared to 49.1 percent (28-57) for the Garnet, and committed just four turnovers to seven for Swarthmore. Free throws were relatively even as AU was 10 for 17 (.588) and Swarthmore was 12 for 17 (.706), and the Knights also outrebounded Swarthmore 32-30, but couldn't overcome the three-point disparity. Arcadia came into the game shooting 34.8 percent from deep as a team, but shot just 3 of 13 (.231) on Sunday.
Â
Davis led the Knights with 20 points, while Scott, Pierfy and Slone all scored 11. Scott added seven assists, Pierfy had eight boards, and Derr finished with nine points and four rebounds off the bench.
Â
Harkins led all players with 28 points, hitting on 8 of 13 three-pointers, while Wiley and Zac O'Dell chipped in 16 points apiece. Nate Shafer added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Â
The Knights are on the road on Wednesday at DeSales beginning at 8 p.m., then return home on Saturday to take on Hood at 3 p.m.
