OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Arcadia's women's volleyball team fell to Stevenson 3-1 in the finals of the MAC Commonwealth Championships on Saturday evening.
The second-seeded Mustangs prevailed 16-25, 25-18, 25-20, 30-28 in the second consecutive meeting between the schools in the conference championship match.
In the opening set, a fast start from the Knights gave Arcadia an early 9-4 lead and prompted a Mustang timeout. Four straight points from Stevenson out of the timeout pulled the Mustangs to within three at 9-6, but the Knights got kills from
Shannon Ryan and
Lauren Enfield, as well as a pair of SU hitting errors to extend their lead to 13-6.
Stevenson managed to get as close as three at 18-15, but a 7-1 run capped by an Enfield kill closed out the first set and gave AU a 1-0 lead.
Arcadia started quickly in the second set as well, getting blocks from
Maddie Sehrt on three of its first five scoring plays in taking a 5-1 lead. The fast start by the Knights was met with a quick response from the Mustangs, and a 9-4 scoring lead gave the home team a 10-9 lead on a Victoria Prokic kill. The Knights still trailed by one (14-13) when the Mustangs used a 5-2 run to take 19-15 lead and take control of the set.
The third set turned on the strength of a 14-4 run by the Mustangs that turned a 6-6 tie into a 20-10 lead on a kill from Katie Leftridge. The Knights answered with four straight points, including two more blocks from Sehrt, to get within 20-14, and later 23-17. Two SU attack errors and a kill from Enfield pulled the Knights to within 23-20, but the comeback was thwarted by back-to-back kills from the Mustangs.
Stevenson seemed to seized control of the match with a 9-4 run late in the fourth set. The Knights led 14-11, but the Mustangs surged ahead 20-18 and eventually led 22-20. The Knights, however, battled back to tie the match at 24-24 Sehrt's eighth block of the match. The back and forth continued as each team had chances to pick up the win, until the Mustangs scored three straight points to close out the match.
Enfield led the Knights with 17 kills and added eight digs. Sehrt had eight kills and 10 total blocks, and
Allison Elechko added seven kills and 15 kills.
Julia Paliwodzinski handed out 39 assists and picked up 12 digs and three blocks.
