Earlham Edges Women's Hoops in OT

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Arcadia women's basketball team fell in overtime, 69-65, to Earlham on Friday afternoon in its final game at the Cruzin Classic.

The Knights now stand at 5-7 on the season while Earlham stands at 4-7 overall.

A closely-contested game that featured 15 lead changes and 14 ties, and never saw either team lead by more than five, turned in the final two minutes of the extra session as the Quakers hit on six of their final eight free throw attempts to keep AU at bay.

Taylor Fritz's short jumper with 1:31 left in OT tied the game for the 14th time at 63-63. Camryn White put Earlham up 64-63 when she split a pair of free throws at the 1:00 mark. Following an empty possession by the Knights, White once again split a pair with 39 seconds to play that gave the Quakers a 65-63 lead.

Another empty possession for AU led to two free throws by Makayla McFarland with 15 seconds to play that pushed the Quakers' lead to 67-63. Fritz quickly answered with a layup to make it a one-possession game with under 10 seconds to play, but McFarland made good on two more shots from the charity stripe with five seconds to play that sealed the win.

The Knights forced the extra session by outscoring the Quakers 7-2 over the final 2:35 of regulation, including making up a 55-50 deficit with 1:31 to play. A triple from Julia Makowski followed by a Courtney Hoffman layup tied the game at 55-55 with 49 seconds left in regulation. The Quakers missed a layup with 35 seconds to play that Makowski corralled to give AU possession. Following a timeout, the Knights got two potential game-winning shots off in the final 10 seconds but were unable to convert.

Taylor Dunn led three Knights in double figures with 13 points and she added three steals. Fritz posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards, while Makowski added 11 points and six rebounds. Asya Alba handed out seven assists, pulled down five rebounds and picked up two steals.

Earlham shot just 39.7 percent (23-58) from the field, but got to the line 34 times and hit on 20 attempts (.588). Conversely, the Knights were just 7 of 14 at the charity stripe. Arcadia held a 44-43 edge on the glass and shot 6 of 13 (.462) from long range, while the Quakers were 3 of 12 (.250) from beyond the arc.

McFarland led all scorers with 22 points, White scored 17 with seven boards, three steals and two blocks, while Kayla Bowling scored 10 points. Acacia Tenette led the Quakers with nine rebounds and added five steals and four assists.

The Knights will now break for the holidays, returning to action on January 2, when they play host to Rutgers Camden beginning at 6 p.m.
