Hot Bats Fuel 2-0 Day as Baseball Downs Susquehanna and Kean

PORT CHAROLETTE, Fla. – The Arcadia baseball team opened spring break play in Florida Sunday afternoon with a 16-12 win over Susquehanna before besting Kean by a score of 13-3. The Knight's bats came alive early and stayed hot all day, as the team combined for 26 hits on the day.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Knights improved to 4-1 on the year.
  • The River Hawks dropped to 0-6.
  • The Cougars fell to 6-6.
 
ARCADIA 16, SUSQUEHANNA 12
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The bats went to work early for Arcadia as junior Luke Hohenstein plated sophomore Bryan Gillen with a triple to left in the top of the first inning, before senior Nick Cardace singled him home in the next at-bat.
  • The game was tied at five heading to the fourth inning, before the Knights' bats came to life with five runs in the frame. Two runs scored when Hohenstein reached on a fielder's choice with help from a throwing error from the shortstop. Cardace followed with his third-straight RBI single, before junior Sean Carew doubled down the left field to bring them home and put the Knights up 10-5.
  • Arcadia held an 11-10 lead heading to the 8th inning, before Carew plated freshman Matt Ernst with a double to left center and sophomore Phil Pierfy sent an RBI-single up the middle for a 13-10 lead. The River Hawks plated two in the bottom of the frame to pull back to within one at 13-12.
  • Cardace gave the Knights insurance with a three-run home run to dead center with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Hohenstein went 4-5 in the game with two triples, a double, five RBI and four runs scored.
  • Cardace had a 4-6 outing with a home run, six RBI and a run scored.
  • Carew registered three hits, including a pair of doubles with three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Gillen drew four walks.
ON THE HILL:
  • Senior Mike Boulanger got the start, striking out three over four innings of work. Sophomore Rob Lichtenberger threw one inning. Junior Joel Bartoni tossed two shutout innings, before senior Connor Laigiae picked up his second save of the season while fanning two over two innings.
  • Bobby Grigas threw three innings in the start for Susquehanna. Jack Kinney took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) in 0.2 innings.
ARCADIA 13, KEAN 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights struck early as Pierfy and sophomore Zak Thomas each drew bases loaded walks in the top of the first inning to bring in a run.
  • Three more runs crossed the plate in the top of the third, as Hohenstein doubled down the left field line to plate freshman Josh Fulmer from second. Two batters later, Pierfy sent a double to left center field to score Cardace and Hohenstein to put the Scarlet and grey in front 5-0.
  • Arcadia added two more in the top of the third inning as junior Nick Ponente singled up the middle to bring home freshman Evan Hurst from third, before scoring on a sac fly from Gillen.
  • The Knights added to an 8-2 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Hohenstein drove in Fulmer with a sac fly. Three batters later, Pierfy drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Gillen. With the bases loaded and two out, sophomore Dylan Towey sent a two-run single to left field that plated Pierfy and Carew and gave the Arcadia a 12-2 lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Gillen led the Scarlet and Grey with a 3-6 outing that included a double, RBI and two runs scored.
  • Pierfy drove in a game-high four runs. He and Cardace each walked three times.
  • Towey registered three RBI.
ON THE HILL:
  • Sophomore Jeremy Sabathne picked up his first win of the season, throwing six strong innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Sophomore Tyler Showers picked up the save as he threw three scoreless innings in relief.
  • Justin Hernandez suffered the loss for Kean, allowing five runs on two hits with six walks in 1.2 innings of work.
UP NEXT:
  • The Knights continue their spring break competition tomorrow morning against Ohio Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
