Baseball Clinches MAC Commonwealth Postseason Berth with Split Against Hood

AMBLER, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Hood Saturday, claiming game one, 14-11, before falling in game two, 21-3. Despite the game two setback, the day ended on a positive note as the Knights clinched their spot in the MAC Commonwealth Championship.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey own a 22-9 record on the year, and are 12-4 against MAC Commonwealth opponents.
  • The Blazers are now 27-7, with an 11-7 conference mark.
GAME ONE: ARCADIA 14, HOOD 11
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Freshman Josh Fulmer plated the first run of the day by bringing in senior Nick Cardace with a single through the left side. In the next at-bat, junior Nick Ponente plated junior Luke Hohenstein with a sac fly to left field. Junior Bryan Gillen ended the frame with a two-run single to right field.
  • After the visitors plated four in the top of the fourth, Arcadia came back with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Matt Ernst and Gillen each drove in a run by reaching on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Junior Sean Carew followed with an RBI single to left, before junior Phil Pierfy plated Ernst on a groundout. Gillen scored the last run of the inning on a single through the left side by Cardace.
  • Hood scored three in the top of the fifth, only to have the Knights respond again. Ponente scored when Gillen reached on an error by the center fielder, before Ernst was brought in by a Carew sac fly to center field. Pierfy gave the Knights a 12-7 lead with an RBI single up the middle to bring in Gillen.
  • Hood pulled within one after scoring four in the top of the sixth inning, however the Knights created separation in the bottom of the frame with two runs. Freshman Brett Moyer plated Fulmer with a single to left field two batters before a Gillen double to left center brought in pinch runner freshman Evan Hurst.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Gillen and Cardace led the bats with three hits, while Carew, Fulmer, Ponente and sophomore Tyler Wisnewski each registered two base knocks.
  • Gillen, Hohenstein and Fulmer each had a double.
  • Gillen drove in four runs.
ON THE HILL:
  • Sophomore Jeremy Sabathne (3-0) picked up the win, allowing seven runs (four earned) and striking out three in 4.2 innings. Hohenstein notched his first save in a scoreless seventh inning.
  • Nate Luscombe (6-2) allowed nine runs on 11 hits in four innings. The Knights tagged Jordan Patterson for three unearned runs in one inning and Tyler Volentine for two runs in 0.1 innings.
GAME TWO: HOOD 21, ARCADIA 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hohenstein hit a two-run single to plate Cardace and Carew in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Hood scored eight runs in the second, one in the third, seven in the fourth and five in the seventh.
  • Hurst scored on a sac fly by sophomore Dylan Towey in the bottom of the seventh inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Carew, Hohenstein, Ernst and Hurst all registered a base hit.
ON THE HILL:
  • Sophomore Andrew Scholz (3-3) allowed eight runs (four earned) in 1.2 innings of work. Sophomore Tyler Showers surrendered seven runs (two earned) while striking out three in 1.2 innings, followed by junior Nick Roda who allowed one unearned run in 1.2 innings. Senior Sean Mulvey tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Senior Mark DiBattiste allowed five runs (one earned) in the ninth.
  • Brad Sawyer (4-1) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned).
NOTES:
  • The Knights can clinch the top seed in the MAC Commonwealth Championship by winning its final five conference games.
UP NEXT:
  • Arcadia hosts Messiah in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader tomorrow.
