GLENSIDE, Pa. -- The Arcadia women's soccer team capitalized on an early miscue by Misericordia in recording a 1-0 win over the No. 19 Cougars on Saturday at Jean Lenox West Field and Delran Pavillion.Â
Â
The Knights remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 5-0-1 on the season, while the Cougars suffered their first loss and stand at 4-1-1.
Â
Less than five minutes in to the contest,
Erin Vander Plaat found herself in on the Misericordia goalkeeper Alexis Benedetto and managed to get a weak shot on goal before getting run over by Benedetto. Vander Plaat's shot on an open goal was saved off the line, but the Cougar netminder was booked with a yellow card and AU was awarded a penalty kick.
Â
Bridget Sway took the kick and calmly deposited a ball in the back of the net passed a diving Benedetto for a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game.
Â
Benedetto made two solid saves over the next 10 minutes as the Knights' offense continued to apply the pressure in the game's early going to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
Â
In the second half, the Cougars repeatedly sent numbers forward, resulting in an 11-1 advantage in shots in the second half, but
Brianna Williams was up to the task and made four saves in the second period.
Â
Misericordia had a golden chance early in the second half, but Ashley Edgell's long-range attempt sailed just high past Williams and hit the crossbar.
Â
IN GOAL: Williams made six saves, two off her season high, and kept the opposition scoreless for the fourth consecutive game. She has not allowed a goal in the last 350:21 she has played. Benedetto made four saves for the Cougars.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Cougars ended with a 17-10 edge in shots, but much of that came in the second half as they threw numbers forward looking for the equalizer … Arcadia held a 9-6 edge in shots in the first half … Misericordia also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, including 6-0 over the final 45 minutes … The 17 shots against are tied for the most allowed in a game this season (Montclair State), and surpassed the number of shots allowed from the last three games combined … The eight corner kicks against were also the most that AU has surrendered this season.
Â
UP NEXT: Next up is a Monday afternoon affair against another nationally-ranked opponent, Christopher Newport, beginning at 4 p.m.
