SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Arcadia women's volleyball team ran its win streak to seven matches with two more wins at Slugfest 2018. The Knights opened with a 3-0 win over Mills, then closed out a 3-2 win over UC Santa Cruz.
Â
With the 4-0 trip to the West Coast, the Knights improved their record to 9-1 through 10 games, believed to be the best 10-game start in school history. The Knights won a school-record 23 games last season and sat at 7-3 after 10 games.
Â
Arcadia 3, Mills 0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-14)
Similar to day one, in which AU also posted a 3-0 win over Mills, the Knights were never truly threatened en route to a sweep. Arcadia once again held Mills to a negative hitting percentage (-.068), and 10 different players recorded at least three kills in a balance effort.
Â
Lizzie Joseph led the Knights with six kills, and
Allison Elechko and
Maddie Hall each had five.
Kaylee Bumpus paced the defense with 15 digs, while
Nicole Suarez chipped in 13.
Â
The Knights needed a big rally in the second set to complete the sweep. Mills opened up an 8-1 lead early before AU found its rhythm. A 13-2 scoring surge gave the Knights a 14-10 lead on a service ace from
Lauren Enfield. Mills managed to tie the contest at 17-17, but a 6-1 run from the Knights gave AU a 23-18 lead and essentially sealed the win.
Â
Arcadia 3, UC Santa Cruz (21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9)
The Knights rebounded from a first-set loss to take a 2-1 lead in the match then held off the Banana Slugs in the fifth and final set to complete the perfect weekend.
Â
In the fifth and final set, the Knights went from down 3-2 to up 9-3 on the strength of an excellent service rotation from Elechko. She notched a trio of service aces during the run, the last prompting a timeout from UC Santa Cruz.
Â
Shannon Ryan had kills for four of the Knights' last five points and finished the match with 12 in total. Elechko led the way with 14 kills, while
Maddie Sehrt and Enfield had 12 and 10, respectively.
Julia Paliwodzinski had 44 assists and 22 digs, while
Emily Eng led the team with 32 digs. Elechko also finished with three service aces.
Â
The Knights return home to Alumni Gymnasium on Wednesday to take on Messiah at 7:30 p.m.
