GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia men's basketball team won the MAC Commonwealth Championship for the first time in program history, with a 92-56 triumph over Widener on Saturday evening inside Alumni Gymnasium.
Josh Scott led the Knights with a game-high 30 points, while also totaling five rebounds, four assists and three steals en route to Tournament MVP honors. He was 7 of 12 from the floor and a perfect 12 for 12 at the line.
Evan Slone also scored in double figures with 13 points, shooting 5 for 7 from the floor, and grabbed five boards.
Da'Kquan Davis racked up 10 rebounds and scored nine points.
The title is Arcadia's fifth MAC Championship overall and fourth since the fall of 2017. The men's basketball team is the fourth program to claim a title in that span, joining the women's soccer, women's lacrosse, and baseball programs. The men's basketball team is also the third male team and second male program to claim a MAC title, joining the baseball team which has won each of the last two MAC Commonwealth titles.
After Widener scored the first bucket of the game to take a 2-0 lead, Davis hit a three to put Arcadia up 3-2. The Knights then scored nine-straight points, which was capped by a layup from Scott, to make the score 12-2, prompting the Pride to call timeout. Following the timeout, the Knights scored five more points, to take a 17-2 lead with 14:37 remaining in the half.
Arcadia kept the hot start going, scoring 11 of the next 15 points to stretch its lead to 22 points (28-6). The run began with pair of free throws from Slone, and was capped by free throws from
Steve Pendleton, to give the Knights a commanding lead with 9:01 to play in the opening stanza. Widener nine of its first 11 shots from the field and committed four turnovers in that span.
The Pride cut the Knights' lead to 14 (28-14) with 7:30 to play after scoring eight straight points. Still leading by 14 (34-20) with 3:40 remaining, the Knights closed the half on a 9-3 run, and led 43-23 at the break.
The Knights cruised in the second half, outscoring the Pride 49-33, to secure the 36-point win. Widener never trimmed its deficit to fewer than 17 points in the second half. The Knights saw 12 different players reach the scoring column, and only two players, Scott and Slone, reached double figures in what was a balance offensive showing.
Arcadia shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the field, and went 22 of 27 (.844) from the charity stripe, including converting its first 22 free throws of the game. AU had a huge advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Pride 50-18, and held Widener to just one offensive rebound. Arcadia also forced 12 turnovers, and scored 16 points off those turnovers in the win. Widener was held to 37.3 percent (19-51) shooting in the contest, and hit on just 13 of 24 (.542) free throw attempts.
The Knights will now await their NCAA Tournament opponent. The selection show is on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
