Thomas Homers in Loss to Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Zak Thomas was 3 for 4 with a home run, but the Arcadia baseball team dropped a 14-1 decision at Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon.

Arcadia is now 2-1 on the season, while JHU is 1-0.

Thomas' home run to lead off the second staked the Knights to a 1-0 lead and was one of nine hits on the day for AU. Johns Hopkins answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs, including a two-run triple by Austin Sacks, gave the home team a 3-1 lead.

A leadoff homer in the fourth stretched the Blue Jay's lead to 4-1. In the sixth, Trevor Mattson and Thomas led off with back-to-back singles to give AU two on with nobody out. Following a flyout, Anthony Zupito singled to load the bases and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in Nick Ponente. However, the Blue Jays got out of the jam when Ponente flew out to center and Mattson was thrown out at home trying to score for a double play.

Johns Hopkins poured it on with 10 runs in the seventh inning off three different Arcadia pitchers.

Tyler Showers started on the mound for AU and was effective over 6.0 innings. He four runs on six hits while striking out seven and not allowing a walk. Nick Fossile, Robert Lichtenberger and Carson Denham pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and four walks.

Preston Betz started for JHU and gave up one run on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Thomas finished 3 for 4 with the home run and Matt Ernst was 2 for 3. Sean Carew was 1 for 3 with a double and was hit by a pitch.

Arcadia is back in action next Saturday at Scranton beginning at 11 a.m.
