Baseball Cruises to 12-2 Win Over Susquehanna

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- A five-run outburst in the top of the first and seven strong innings on the mound by Joel Bartoni helped lead the Arcadia baseball team to a 12-2 win over Susquehanna Monday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla. With the victory, the Knights improve to 3-3 overall.

AU came out the gates firing with its first three men reaching base on a walk, single and hit by pitch. Trevor Mattson lifted a ball deep enough to center field, allowing Bryan Gillen (two walks) to trot home for the game's first run. Phil Pierfy strolled to the plate next and shot a ball through the left side, bringing in Dylan Towey and Sean Carew. Zak Thomas (two runs scored, stolen base) followed suit with a double just inside the right field line, pushing in Piefy from second, who had earlier advanced to second on a passed ball. During the next batter, Thomas gambled on a steal of third, and was able to walk home as an errant throw attempt went sailing into left field. When the dust settled, the Knights led 5-0 on four hits and one error.

The Scarlet & Grey kept the foot on the gas pedal as they added a run each in the second and fourth innings, as well as three more in the fifth frame by way of two wild pitches, a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout to extend their advantage to 10-0.

Susquehanna eventually recorded crooked numbers in the sixth inning as it manufactured a run on a sacrifice fly by Craig Roumes and an infield single by Adam Schreck, cutting the deficit to 10-2.

The Knights put the lead back up to 10 for good in the seventh as Matt Ernst (stolen base) and Nick Ponente galloped home on single to right field by Towey, closing out the scoring and securing a 12-2 Knights win.

The Knights 13-hit offensive assault was led by Ponente, who went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Three other Knights recorded two hits apiece.

Bartoni toed the rubber for Arcadia, allowing two runs (one earned), scattering eight hits and fanning eight. Nick Roda came out of the bullpen to shut the door for AU, allowing three hits in two innings of scoreless work.

Arcadia continues its Florida trip Tuesday afternoon with a single-game with Ohio Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
