Baseball Wins Slugfest Against Scranton, 16-11

SCRANTON, Pa. – Arcadia and Scranton combined for 32 hits, 27 runs and 13 pitchers as the Knights came out on top of a slugfest with a 16-11 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Volpe Field in Scranton, Pa.

Bryan Gillen paced the offense as he went 4 for 5 with two doubles and five RBIs from the lead-off spot. Trevor Mattson and Anthony Zupito each tallied three hits, and all nine starting players for AU recorded a base hit.

After the Royals pushed across a run in the bottom of the first, AU answered with three of its own in the second on a Matt Ernst two-run single and a Gillen triple to left field, putting the Knights up 3-1.

Both squads traded runs in the bottom of the second and the top of the third, making the score 4-2 in favor of Arcadia.

In the home half of the third, the Royals exploded for five runs on four hits to take the 7-4 advantage, chasing Arcadias' starting pitcher, Carson Denham, from the game in the process.

The Knights responded with a five-run outburst of their own, capped off by back-to-back home runs by Dylan Towey and Sean Carew, pushing AU out in front, 9-7.

Scrantons' Ian McIntosh launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, locking the game at 9-9.

In the fifth, Towey knocked in Zupito on a single to take the lead again, but the Royals rallied right back with a two-run double by Tim Gailor, to go up 11-10 after five frames.

That was the last lead Scranton held as the Knights tallied six runs in the next three innings. The dagger came in the eighth as Gillen laced a ball into the left center field gap, bringing around Zupito and Zak Thomas to score, securing the 16-11 win.

Arcadia won the battle in the box as they out-hit the Royals, 20-12, with each side recording seven extra-base hits.

Five Knights went to the mound, with Nick Fossile being the lucky recipient of the win for his 2.0 innings of work. He did not allow a baserunner and struck out three.

Scranton saw the Knights five pitchers and raised them three more as eight Royals stepped on the hill with none going more than 1.2 innings. Josh Lydon was saddled for the loss for his 1.1 inning appearance in which he surrendered five runs (3 ER) on three hits and two walks.

Arcadia travels to Widener on Friday for a single-game before hosting the Pride in a doubleheader on Saturday. The two games Saturday mark the Knights' first true home games of the season at Skip Wilson Field in Ambler, Pa.
