GLENSIDE, Pa. -- The Arcadia softball team swept a doubleheader from Haverford in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon at Blankley Field. The Knights prevailed 4-3 in eight innings in the opener, then held off the Fords 4-2 in the nightcap.
Â
With the sweep, the Knights improved to 9-5 on the season, while the Fords slipped to 10-6.
Â
Arcadia 4, Haverford 3 (8 Innings)
Alexa Vardiman hit a game-winning single with two outs in the eighth to lift AU to a game one win. The Fords had rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth before Vardiman's single.
Â
Jackie Bilotti, who was placed on second base to begin the eighth, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Hunter Schantz. Following a walk and a strikeout, Vardiman laced the first pitch she saw through the right side allowing Bilotti to score easily from third.
Â
The game had been scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when
Morgan Marchesani drove in Kristen Cancelliere with a ground out. Bilotti and
Alex DeStefano scored on an error by the Fords to push the Knights in front 3-0.
Â
Vardiman and Cancelliere each had a pair of base hits in the opener, and
Kylee Schwind picked up her fourth win in the circle. She pitched all 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits without a walk and striking out six.
Â
Arcadia 4, Haverford 2
The Knights built an early 4-0 lead then held on as the Fords made a late-inning charge.
Mary Pat Murray allowed two runs (1 ER) in 7.0 innings. She worked around 13 hits and one walk, recording eight strikeouts.
Â
Two bunt singles and two walks in the first inning resulted in a pair of early runs for the Scarlet & Grey. In the fifth, Bilotti drew a two-out walk and stole second. Schantz drove her in with a single and moved to second on an error.
Alexis Burge followed with a long double to right center that scored Schantz and gave the Knights a 4-0 lead.
Â
Three base hits and a walk to open the sixth pushed across the Fords' first run and left the bases loaded with nobody out. Vardiman came home with a ground ball for the first out of the inning, and Murray responded with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.
Â
In the seventh, the Fords put two on with one out and pulled to within 4-2 on a sacrifice fly to deep center field. A two-out single gave Haverford runners on second and third with two outs, but Murray was once again up to the task, inducing a pop out to end the game.
Â
Marchesani was 2 for 3 with a run scored for AU and Schantz had base hit and walked twice.
Â
The Knights are at Misericordia on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m.
