Baseball Rolls Past Stevenson, 16-3

STEVENSON, Md. -- The Arcadia baseball team belted out 21 hits to overwhelm Stevenson for a 16-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Sugar Field. With the win, the Knights improve to 17-8 on the season and 10-2 in the MAC-Commonwelth. The Mustangs drop to .500 at 13-13 on the year and 6-6 in conference play.

The Knights humbled the Mustangs right from the start as they ripped off five hits to score four runs in the top of the first inning. Sean Carew laced a double into left field to bring around Bryan Gillen and Zak Thomas. After Dylan Towey singled, Trevor Mattson shot a single into left field to plate Carew. Nick Ponente capped off the frame with a single back up the middle, scoring Towey to take the 4-0 lead.

A Zach DeLong home run in the home half of the second put the Mustangs on the board. AU responded with an Anthony Zupito double in the top of the third. DeLong answered right back with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning, making the score 5-3 in favor of the Knights.

In the fifth, singles from Zupito and Ponente plated Carew and Phil Pierfy, respectively, pushing the lead back up to four at 7-3.

The Scarlet & Grey kept the pressure on with three more tallies in the seventh on a two-run home run by Mattson and a Gillen single to plate Zachary Sekelick.

Arcadia's bats stayed sizziling as it scored four runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth for good measure to secure the 16-3 win.

Nine Knights recorded multiple base hit games. Towey led the assault with four hits and three runs scored. Gillen chipped in three hits and two RBI from the lead-off spot. Pierfy made home plate his safe haven as he came around to step on it four times on the day. Ponente, who was one of seven Knights with two hits, knocked in three runs himself.

Joel Bartoni notched his team-leading sixth win in his 6.0 innings of work on the bump for Arcadia. The senior yielded three runs (2 ER) on three hits while striking out four. Mitch Blake went the final 3.0 frames and scattered two hits to pick up his third save of the season.

Joe Thompson was saddled with the defeat for the Mustangs only lasting 4.2 innings and surrendering seven runs (6 ER) on 11 hits. Five relief pitchers followed Thompson to piecemeal the remaining innings together.

AU returns to the friendly confines of Skip Wilson Field on Apr. 12 as it hosts Hood in the first game of a three-game set. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3:30 p.m.
