Baseball Sees Season End With Conference Championship Loss To Widener

YORK, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team saw its season end with a 11-5 defeat at the hands of Widener in the 2019 MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championship in York, Pa. AU won the first game of the day against Hood, 9-2 to extend its season before falling to the Pride on Saturday.

No. 3 Arcadia 9, No. 1 Hood 2
In the tournament's first elimination game, Joel Bartoni made sure it wasn't Arcadia who was going home.

Bartoni (9-1) did a yeoman's work on the hill for AU as he went the distance for the fifth time this season, throwing 137 pitches. The right-hander surrendered two runs (1 ER) while scattering nine hits and walking four with three strikeouts. Bartoni's nine wins marks the single-season record for wins in a season, passing eight wins set by Matt Melcher (2002) and Ryan Windt (2004). The victory also marks the right-hander's 22nd career win, tied for the most in team history with Tyler Pennep (2004-07).

The scoring got kicked off on a single to right field by Zak Thomas in the top of the second inning to plate Trevor Mattson gave the Knights an early 1-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Thomas once again drove in a run on a bases loaded single to center, this time bringing in Phil Pierfy. Matt Ernst followed Thomas and perfectly executed a squeeze bunt, allowing Anthony Zupito to sprint in from third, extending AU's lead to 3-0.

The Blazers didn't go away quietly in the home half of the sixth as Dylan Beck dashed home on a wild pitch for their first run.

Arcadia got the run back in the seventh inning as Dylan Towey struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt, and an errant throw to first base allowed Sean Carew to score, putting the Knights back up three at 4-1.

In the bottom of the same frame, a Brad Sawyer single to right field brought around Nathan Kessler to cut the Blazers' deficit to 4-2.

A three-run double by Nick Ponente just inside the right field line in the top of the eighth broke the game open for the Scarlet & Grey, making the score 7-2 in favor of the Knights.

AU tacked on two more insurances runs in the ninth as Pierfy scored on a fielder's choice and Towey touched home plate before Thomas was caught stealing second base, to assure the 9-2 victory.

Mattson and Thomas led the Scarlet & Grey's attack with two hits apiece, with Thomas driving in three runs. Ponente tallied three RBI as well, all with one swing. Six other Knights recorded a base hit.

As for Hood, Daniel Shepherd had a team-high two hits, as eight total Blazers tallied a base knock.
