GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University women's basketball team defeated Lycoming College, 56-47, on Thursday night. The Knights rode momentum from a dominant second quarter, where they outscored the Warriors, 16-5, which marked the fewest points they've allowed in a single quarter all season.
Julia Makowski put together a well-rounded performance with a team-best 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists. First-year standouts
Scarlett Glasser-Nehls and
Maria Tully also made their presence felt with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lycoming controlled the pace early with a 7-0 run to open the game until
Taylor Fritz put an end to the rally with a much-needed layup. The Knights trimmed their deficit to three points following a pair of Tully jumpers, 13-10, with 3:25 remaining.
- After the Warriors built their lead back to six points in the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Knights dominated the rest of the stanza with a 13-1 advantage. Tully sparked the Knights run with a jumper and three-pointer on back-to-back possessions., while Glasser-Nehls gave the squad its first lead with a bucket, 20-19. Following an
Olivia Wyckoff jumper in the paint,
Anna Tassari drained a three-pointer from the wing to expand Arcadia's lead to six points. Glasser-Nehls then capped off 14-consecutive Arcadia points with a jumper in the paint, 27-19.
- Makowski gave the Knights an early lift in the second half after converting an and-one, and then adding a bucket on the following possession to pull ahead by 13 points, 36-23, with 6:51 remaining. Later in the quarter, Tassari expanded the Knights lead to a game-high 15 points with her second bucket of the game. However, Lycoming would shrink its deficit to 10 points with a 5-0 run to close out the third quarter, 44-34.
- Lycoming scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to pull within four points, but Glasser-Nehls silenced the Warriors with a three-pointer from the corner after a Makowski screen as the shot clock expired, 47-40. Makowski then converted another and-one after fighting through contact and getting a tough layup to fall with 2:39 remaining. The junior guard closed out the final three minutes of regulation with nine points to help seal the victory for Arcadia.
