GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University field hockey program took tenth-ranked Kean to double overtime Wednesday night at Jean Lenox West Field after Lindsay Kuss' game-tying goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, but the Cougars netted the game-winner moments into the second overtime to come away with a 2-1 win.
Gracie Fenner was solid in goal for the Knights, making 16 saves on the night while facing 34 shots - 18 of which were on net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Arcadia defense was put to the test early as Kean was able to fire off eight shots and was awarded four penalty corners in the opening quarter. The Cougars broke through with the game's first goal in the final minute of the first, capitalizing on its fourth and final corner of the period.
-Fenner totaled five saves in the opening half alone to hold the Knights' deficit at one, making several spectacular stops along the way. The Knights looked to have a chance to tie following a Lindsay Kuss penalty corner, but Morgan McEntire's ensuing shot was met with a save.
-The Knights began to gain some momentum offensively in the second half while Fenner continued to make save after save in the cage. Despite a scoreless third quarter, Arcadia rallied in the final three-plus minutes in one of their last offensive possessions of regulation. A Kuss penalty corner turned into a deflected shot by the goalie and the loose ball went right to the stick of Kuss at the left of the cage, who collected and beat the diving Kean keeper to tie the game at one and send it to overtime.
-Kean had one last chance at the end of regulation with a penalty corner as time expired, but the chance on net sailed wide right. The two sides traded possessions back-and-forth in the first overtime period, resulting in a second overtime where Kean was able to net the game-winning goal just over three minutes in to escape with the 2-1 victory.
