Baseball Takes Two from Penn State Harrisburg
AMBLER, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team used the big inning multiple times as it swept a doubleheader from visiting Penn State Harrisburg in non-conference action from Skip Wilson Field on Saturday, winning game one 6-4 before taking game two 13-9.
The Knights are on a seven-game winning streak, improving to 7-1 on the season.
Penn State Harrisburg got on the board in the top of the first of game one with a two-out run scoring single.
Arcadia took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two runs.
Joseph Kumar reached on an error and moved to second on a balk before coming around to score on a sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Smolen that was thrown away, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Matthew Sot. After he stole third, Smolen came in on a double-steal with
Matt Donchez going to second after walking.
The Lions retook the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs on three hits and added a fourth run in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Smolen reached on a one-out error and moved to second on Sot's single. Donchez followed with a single to load the bases with the first run coming in to score on a squeeze bunt. Penn State intentionally walked
Alex Madera to re-load the bases before
Emilio Pallante reached on a fielding error that brough home Donchez and Sot to make the score 5-4 Knights.
Arcadia finished the scoring when Smolen doubled to left bringing home Kumar, who drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh.
Nadell Booker earned his first win of the season with two strikeouts in one inning of work while
Owen Margolis earned the save with three scoreless innings to end the contest.
Justin Massielo, Kumar, Smolem, Sot, and Donchez had the only hits for Arcadia.
In game two, the Knights got on the board in the bottom of the first when Madera walked to lead off the game, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error on the catcher, and scored on a double to right by Kumar, who came in to score on a single to right off the bat of
Connor Cheeseman.
The Lions took the lead in the top of the second with three runs.
Arcadia took a 6-3 lead in the top of the third when Madera led off with a single and moved to third on a double from Kumar. Massielo brought home Madera with a sacrifice fly with Kumar scoring on a throwing error. After Cheeseman stole second, Smolen reached on an infield single that advanced Cheeseman to third, with Cheeseman and Smolen scoring on a single to shallow right from
Hunter Curley.
The Lions cut the lead to 6-5 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Zachary Sekelick came in to score in the bottom of the fourth when he was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, stole second, and scored when a sacrifice bunt from Madera was missed by the first baseman and went into right field. Madera came in to score a couple batters later when Massielo tripled to left-center.
The Knights added on in the bottom of the fifth when Smolen led off with a single to left and moved to second when Curley walked. After a double-steal, a squeeze bunt from Sekelick brought home both runners with an incredible heads-up play from Curley taking advantage of the defense with a hustle play scoring from second on a bunt. After Madera doubled to left, Pallante singled to bring him in with Pallante stealing second and scoring on a wild pitch making the score 12-5.
The Lions finished the scoring in the top of the sixth with a three-run home run.
Hunter Sibley moved to 2-0, allowing five runs on eight hits across five innings with three walks and four strikeouts.
Zach Steiger,
Colin Bowdish, and
Koby Staivecki finished the final four innings.
Madera, Kumar, Massielo, and Smolen each finished game to with two hits.
The Knights return to action tomorrow when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game.
