Smolen’s Walk-Off Helps Baseball Sweep Stevens

Smolen's Walk-Off Helps No. 5/17 Baseball Sweep Stevens

AMBLER - The No. 5/17 Arcadia University baseball team swept Stevens Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader, taking game one 7-2 and securing an extra-inning 5-4 walk-off win in game two.

The Knights improved to 11-1 in conference play and 24-4 overall.

In game one, Arcadia was first to put runs on the board in the bottom of the third third inning when Alex Madera reached first on a fielder's choice and stole second before coming around on an RBI double from Hunter Curley to left-center. Curley then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Justin Massielo singled to right field bringing another run in for the Knights, putting them in the lead 2-0.

Arcadia furthered its lead in the bottom of the fourth when pinch-hitter Zachary Sekelick walked, followed by a single from Matthew Sot advancing the runner to second. Sekelick moved to third after Stevens' pitcher threw away a pick-off attempt, and Griffin Murphy laid down a perfect safety squeeze to bring the run home. Pallante next reached on a fielder's choice when the fielder decided to check on Sot at second instead of throwing to first, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Curley then brought them home when he doubled down the left field line making the lead 5-0.

Stevens managed to put two runs up, one in the fifth inning and one in the sixth making the score 5-2.

Murphy led off the bottom of the sixth when he walked followed by Pallante with a single down the third base line advancing Murphy to second. Madera then ripped an RBI single to center bringing home Murphy and moving Pallante to second. Curley walked, followed by Massielo singling to left bringing Pallante in to finish the scoring

Nick Fossile got the win for the Knights in the game one, allowing two runs across 5.1 innings, scattering four hits with three walks and a season-high five strikeouts. Owen Margolis earned the save, pitching the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run.

Curley and Pallante each finished game one 2-for-3, with Curley bringing in three runs while scoring one and Pallante scoring twice. Massielo added two hits with two rbi's.

Arcadia put the first run up on the board in game two in the bottom of the first inning when Curley was walked, advanced to third on a single to right by Massielo, and scored on a throwing error.

Stevens took the lead in the top of the second inning with two runs.

The Knights regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Chesseman got on with a one-out walk and moved to second when Ryan Smolen followed with a walk.
Cheeseman came around on Sekelick's double to right-center that moved Smolen to third. Smolen came in to score on a wild pitch, with Sekelick following when he came in on a balk.

Stevens cut the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, and with the Ducks down to their final strike in the top of the seventh and a runner on first, Stevens hit a game-tying triple to right.

In the bottom of the eighth, Arcadia loaded the bases on Curley's lead off double to the gap in right-center and a single to left by Massielo, forcing the Ducks to intentionally walk Cheeseman. Smolen then came through for the Knights, launching a hit down the right field line to win the game.

Hunter Sibley pitched the first seven innings for Arcadia, allowing four runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Zach Steiger earned the win in relief, tossing a scoreless eighth.

Massielo finished game two 2-for-4.

The Knights return to action Tuesday when they travel to Elizabethtown College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
