Softball Falls in Rain-Delayed NCAA Regional Second-Round Matchup with WPI

GLENSIDE – After a seven-hour rain delay, a two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference as the Arcadia University softball team fell by a 3-2 final to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the second round of the NCAA Division III Softball Regional hosted by Arcadia University on Saturday.

The Knights fell to 31-10 overall and 1-1 in the regional.

Megan Sooy started the scoring with a bang when she launched a solo homerun to centerfield.

Arcadia added a second run in the top of the third when Serena Goodridge hit a two-out single to right-center scoring Sooy, who doubled to left-center.

WPI got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run cutting the lead to 2-1.

Mother Nature didn't want to cooperate on this day, send the teams into a seven-hour rain delay before play continued in the bottom of the fifth.

After play resumed with a runner on second, the runner stole third and scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Another run came in to score one batter later on an infield single to give the Engineers the lead.

Nathalia Diianni got on with a one-out single to right, followed by a long fly out off the bat off Sooy that appeared to have the distance to clear the fence but was brought back into play by the Engineer's right fielder for the second out.

Juliana Presto moved to 22-5 with the defeat, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Serena Goodridge led Arcadia at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with one RBI. Diianni and Sooy each added two hits apiece.

The Knights return to action tomorrow for game five when they will face the winner of the game between Lesley and Johnson & Wales at 11:00 a.m.
