Lacrosse Falls in Close Contest to Pride

CHESTER, Pa., April 26, 2011-- Arcadia University visiting Widener University a must-win Middle Atlantic women's lacrosse game Tuesday afternoon, turned into another battle, a scene known very well by the Knights this season. Arcadia, trailing 9-4 entering the second half of play put together two separate three goal runs to knot the score at 11-11 with just over nine minutes remaining however Widener would answer scoring two of the final three goals, and maintaining possession for nearly the entire final three minutes of play to take the conference match 13-12 and dashing the Knight's hopes at a playoff berth. Sophomore Meghan Fallon and senior Kreena Patel led the Knights with three goals a piece. Arcadia falls to 7-8 overall and 4-7 within the MAC just out of reach for one of the available six berths for next week's conference tournament.

Widener first year Amy Albano opened the scoring just 1:48 into the contest but Fallon answered with the first of her three goals to keep the game tied in the early going. Widener junior Jen Harnden scored twice in just over two minutes to give the Pride a 4-1 lead with 12:02 left in the first half.

After a 3-1 run for Arcadia, with goals by Patel, junior Stephanie Holguin and Fallon Widener closed the period with four unanswered over the final 4:40 to take a 9-4 lead into halftime.

Arcadia began to shift the momentum early in the second half. The Knights scored the first three of the period, all within the first 4:19 to close to within 9-7. Fallon scored her third of the contest, followed by first year Sara Volk-Perez on the 8-meter and Patel's second of the day. Widener scored two of the next three in just over the next 10 minutes, but the Knight's strung together another three-goal spurt including Patel's second of the half/third of the day, to knot the score at 11-11 with 9:11 left.

Widener junior Jen Harnden scored her fourth of the contest just 1:40 later to regain the Widener lead, only to be answered by another Arcadia goal from senior Jen Ng with 4:59 to play. But Harnden's fifth and final tally proved to be the game-winner.  Widener kept the Arcadia defenders working over the final three minutes of the game as the Pride possessed the ball for all but five seconds of that time frame to secure a much needed victory for themselves and dashing the Knight's post-season chances.

In the net for the Knights, sophomore Deanna Thompson played the first 47:46 making 11 saves with 11 goals against, while junior Amalie Kreitman made one stop in the final 12:14.

The Knights play at MAC opponent Eastern University this coming April 30 at noon.
