Ten Run Third Lifts Alvernia Over Knights

Box Score READING, Pa.:  A ten-run third inning carried host Alvernia University past visiting Arcadia University with the Crusaders defeating the Knights 16-3 in today's single-game Commonwealth Conference baseball series opener at Angelica Park.  The Crusasders out-hit the Knights 19-9 despite multi-hit games from sophomores Justin Simpson (3-5, 2 RBI), David Jacobs (2-4, 1 run) and Pat Kwaitkowski (2-4, 1 RBI).

Senior Adam Planamento was tagged with today's loss as the Knight's starter, allowing 5 earned on 5 hits and 3 walks.

Alvernia starter Mike Weinhold fanned three Knights batter in the first, going on to allow the Knights to scatter 5 singles through his five innings of work.  Arcadia managed to get a run from Weinhold in the fifth before he retired.  He pitched back-to-back walks to sophomores Brandon Martin and Taylor Schon with Martin crossing home on a RBI single from Justin Simpson.  Simpson who led the Knights on 3 for 5, added a second RBI single in the ninth.

The Knights were walked 7 times but stranded 11 runners and were held to just singles from Alvernia's defense that committed no errors and a three-man pitching rotation that combined to fan 10 Arcadia batters.

First years Matt Dwyer, Jonnah Van Bemmelen and Zach Woods all saw action out of the Knights bullpen.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 8-5-1 while the Knights drop to 4-9.

Arcadia host tomorrow's series doubleheader at Erny Field.  First pitch against the Crusaders is set for 12 Noon.
